Birth, Death and Life after death (KNOW YOUR DEATH - 1)

Birth, Death and Life after death - All at the desire of Mind.

What is life? When does it start? When does it end? What happens after it ends? What is the process of rebirth, Moksha or Maha-Nirvana ?

Some of these questions often arise in our mind. Swami Vijnananand has rationally answered these questions in his book “Know your Death”. Also there is a seminar available at Manashakti main center Lonavala (India) where these concepts are lucidly explained.

Mind (or spirit) is an energy which provides ability of doing activities / motion to the body. As long as the mind is associated with the body the condition of “life” exists.

Birth would be the moment of this association and death the moment of dissociation. How do we ascertain these moments with certainty? What must be happening at these vitally important moments of our life?

Relatively it is easier to decide the moment of death. What happens at the time of death? How do we describe the death of a person?  We say:

He departed from his body.
His spirit left.
He breathed his last.
The flame of life extinguished. Etc. etc.

In short death is separation of body from the mind-energy. Logically then, birth would be the moment of this association. This takes place at the moment of conception, the point from which the life energy gets associated with the conceived cell. This cell then starts collecting new cells and form a body to take birth later at the appropriate time.

Mind Energy (Mind Power)

Mind is an energy in the form of non-matter which “Swami Vijnananand” defines as 'transcending the velocity of light, the highest limiting speed of any matter'.
Do we have some idea about the magnitude of the Mind Power or the energy available in a life? We shall try to find this in terms of life and the energy associated with the life. Life begins at the moment of conception where the matter first time gets associated with the mind energy. Then the journey of life begins.

Life is the journey of motion.

Though generally it is believed that life begins at birth, it actually begins at conception, where it is set in motion. The motion continues till a person breathes last, when the motion in the body stops. In short, life is a journey of motion.
Lot of energy is required and released to perform various physical and mental activities from first to the last breath. Everybody, though varying, has given quantum of energy available for use in the life. Studying human energy management in detail, Swami Vijnananand has given some rational measurement for the life energy in his pioneering research on the human life. We will take a brief look at the measure of the magnitude of energy associated with the life which is Mind Power. But before that we should see the enormous un-measurable potential of the mind-energy.

Child Birth, a super-material effect:

If each intricate cell of an infant is to be fashioned by a skilled worker and if s/he would require a minute to create one cell. This means it will take five hundred thousand years to complete the task. Suppose even every person had to contribute a cell to make an infant, entire world population cannot even complete a tiny foot. However, every mother accomplishes this within her womb in 265 days.  How this is done? Science has only begun to perceive the complexity of the miracle. This is the miracle created by the energy associated with life.
(Ref. ‘Mind Power’, Manashakti publication)

Touch of life creates transformation in matter:

A touch of life creates wonderful transformation in a tiny piece of matter.
Catalase is an enzyme in living protoplasm which accelerates the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide into oxygen and water. The reaction can be accelerated by inorganic iron too. But the action of iron is very weak. However, by uniting an iron with special organic substance “pyrrole”, we can make that reaction thousands times more effective. Catalase, a natural enzyme, also contains iron with pyrrole, but its action is about ten millions times stronger because it contains additionally a specific protein.

This specific (protein) difference makes a miracle. Catalyst power of one milligram of iron, contained in the catalase complex (of life full protoplasm), is equal to that of ten tones of inorganic iron. That is the miracle of a touch of life-energy to a matter.
(Ref. ‘Mind Power’, Manashakti publication)

Transcending mind power:

For all our advanced techniques, we have not yet approached the level of rationalism possessed by living nature. Touch of Life gives ten million times more strength to a tiny piece. This is a phenomenon which science has not been able to explain so far. This transcendental power is called mind.

Each mind is unique, so are different its desires, strength and potential, also energy associated with it. Though external energy at physical level could be common to an extent for most human beings, total energy certainly varies from person to person considering the individual mind power.

Example - A billionaire and a middle class person travelling pay the same fare for a plane journey (visible paying capacity for that instance may be the same) while their spare wealth quantum differs, as they deserve.

While absolute total life energy cannot be accurately measured, there are some rational measures for external one. We will take a look at Swamiji’s estimation of external energy.

Life Energy: external measure

We have seen that human body is constantly in motion from birth to death. Thus the motion can be considered as the basis for measure of the life energy. There are a number of motions associated with various body systems. The easiest measurable body motion is pulse rate / heart rate which varies from age to age.

Medical text books provide us with the measure of motion, attributable to a living person during the span of life. The medical books say, that three months prior to birth, average normal pulse rate (pulse beats) is at 150 per minutes. At birth, it is 120 and nearing the age of death (advanced old age), it is gradually reduced to 60 per minute, on an average.

Thus, after birth, individual existence can be mathematically defined as capacity to beat the pulse at 120 per minute and proceed to the end when it is reached; reduced to 60 per minute. Thus right from the birth to old age there is reduction in the life energy. The process of aging begins from the first day.

An anticlimax of the pulse rising at a very old age does occur. Yet the same stems from reasons other than usual. Here, it might have occurred but for hardening of arteries or for the phenomenon of lamina shrinking. (Shrinking of cavity from where the blood flows). Other reasons that may account in this out-of-turn rise in pulse may be the loss of control on some organ or the other.
For special reasons pulse is recorded to be far below normal. Napoleon's pulse was said to be somewhere near 40. But the average as given above stands right for our basis.

At death, it is the mind that leaves body.

It is a planned retreat. It is our experience and it can be easily imagined, that the mind leaves body not because it is tired of the worldly desires to be enjoyed through body but because, the mind finds body damaged and so an inconvenient tool to enjoy. (Shall we add the death time declarations?)
In any case, leaving this argument to the exhaustive discussion in New Way Series, at the moment of death, the continuance of the capacity **3153600000 pulse-beats survives without any doubt. (This applies to normal death, the considerations for deaths due to accidents, suicide or voluntary departure by a Yogi from life by ‘Samadhi’ needs separate discussion, which can be provided separately).
We may just mention here that the state of the mind as it departs the body is vitally important to decide the future course of action.

**On an average the pulse-rate is 150/min (say 2.5 A), at prenatal stage, 120/min (2A) at birth, 70 to 80/min. at grown up age and 60/ min (A) at the old age (before death). In short, body motion decreases with increasing age and it is lowest just before death, although not zero.

Let’s consider (assume) average life of 60 years and 100/min. as an average pulse rate for the life span.

**Based on this, the total energy can be calculated as follows.

 (100* x 60 minutes)       (24 hours)                 (365 days)                       (60* years)
----------------------      X      -----------        X    ----------------       X      --------------
         6,000                       144,000                525, 60 000                           315, 36,000

(* assumption, may vary from person to person).

As estimated above, the total typical average pulse energy during the life of 60 years is about 3.15 billion beats. Before the death moment there is a capacity to beat the pulse at 60/minute.
We have already suggested that these figures are hypothetical and arbitrary. These arithmetical values may better be taken algebraically. Nevertheless, the principle stands vindicated. If we designate algebraically value A to the surviving soul after death (A = 60 beats / min.), i.e. capacity 3153600000 pulse beats, '2A' will be value at birth with capacity 6307200000 pulse beats and '2.5A' (i.e. 7884000000 pulse beats three months prior to birth). Please note that the mind leaves the body at death when it has the capacity A.

Does the mind survive after death? Is it re-born?

The answer to the first part of the question is categorical ‘Yes’. As we have initially defined, Death is dissociation of body and mind. Body (matter) remains as corpse while the mind energy (non-matter) gets released. Now, the question is what happens to the left over capacity A or from where this 2.5 'A' comes from?

By first law of Thermodynamics nothing can come out of nothing. Therefore, the figure 150 (or algebraically figure 2.5 'A') must sometime be 149, 148, 147 and in far end sometime it must be 60 where we again meet the value 'A'.

In each individual case the values of A, 2A, and 2.5A may differ but the principle may stand vindicated.  After death the Mind has following options to choose. (Please see the figure above)

1.      To give up available energy A and go to zero. This is the concept of Maha-Nirvana.
2.      To earn additional energy from A to 2.5 A, and then opt for rebirth.
3.      To not to opt for birth and go on earning additional energy -endlessly up to infinity. This is the stage of Moksha.

As we say “Zero tends to infinity”, both the stages of Maha-Nirvana and Moksha are similar where the mind has given up the right of existence and merged itself in universal cosmic energy.
We have rationally examined the concepts of Birth, Life, Death, Rebirth, Maha-Nirvana, and Moksha.

What must be the plight of the Mind after death before it chooses its options? We shall see this in the articles to follow.

Organized Mind fabricates an "Individual". MIND POWER - 9. (Concluding Part)

Excerpts from book: MIND POWER (1980) CH 14 - 16, Author - Swami Vijnananand (S.V.), Manashakti publication.

‘Organized Mind’ fabricates an ‘individual’, builds around it a net of cells. The fabrication of the individual and net of cells around it is done at ‘whatever quality organizing mind deserves’. Yes! you , I, all of us are surrounded by ghosts , cell by cell , animal by animal , man by man in which individual rests.

14.1. Cell matter common, cell mind ‘as I deserve’

In the following discussions, we have to understand point by point, how the relationship of mind and other surrounding minds make a mark.

Touch of life creates wonderful transformation in a tiny piece of matter:

Body of each cell is comparatively a dead matter. How a touch of life brings about magical transformation to the piece of matter is illustrated below.

Catalase is an enzyme which in living protoplasm accelerates the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide into oxygen and water.

The reaction can be accelerated by inorganic iron too. But the action of iron is very weak.

However by uniting iron with special organic substance “pyrrole”, we can make that reaction thousands times more effective.

Catalase, a natural enzyme, also contains iron with pyrolle, but its action is about ten millions times stronger because it contains in addition a specific protein. This specific difference makes miracle.

Catalyst power of one mg of iron contained in the catalase complex (of life full protoplasm) is equal to that of ten tones of inorganic iron.

That is the miracle of a touch of life to a matter.

Touch of Life gives ten million times strength to the tiny piece. This is a phenomenon which science can’t explain.

To this transcending (that which goes beyond normal limit) power, we call Mind.

Since each mind (with its varying desires) differs, it brings in consideration of “deserving”. The external energy at material level, may be common , but the total energy would vary.(as per mind component)
For all our advanced techniques, we have not yet approached the level of rationalism possessed by living Nature.

Two minds in one body:

Before a baby is born, in pre natal stage, the face of the mother turns lustrous, even in case of unwanted child. The pulse rate of the child and mother are different. By all indications, it means two minds in one body.

14.2. At birth, matter and minds meet as they deserve.

14.2.1. Let us check-up references to birth process independent of parents. (This is not very common phenomenon, yet we have noted here the well-known uncommon facts.)

* Parthenogenesis – definition (virgin birth, Nature’s short cut), Development of an egg cell without being fertilized by a sperm cell, it is not a primitive state of affairs. (Dictionary of Biology, T-250, page 172 and Riddle of science, P-23, page 58)

1 Christ was born without the male partner – a clear case of auto birth.
2 King Dasharatha, the father of Ram distributed liquid (payasa) among his three queens, which was supposed to give him sons. Though the cause of birth was that particular liquid, Dasharatha did not consume it, clear case of auto birth.
3 According to one tale a sweat drop of Hanuman helped a birth. A curios cross breed from crocodile type mother. The son was called Makaradhwaj.
4 In case of Krishna too, He entered the appropriate birth place. This was told by the father of Krishna himself; (Bhagawat, part 10, chapter 2).
5 Mahabharata tells us many such stories.
6 Other religions frequently endorse such phenomenon.
7 In the issue of ‘Therapist’ Jan’1911, there is a story of Madam Blavtsky. After her death, she entered into a fourteen years boy, who was dead that time.

All the above may be overlooked and we turn to the present picture in search of corroboration.

14.2.2 The route of birth is clear.

Bodies of the mother and father provide raw material of matter for the ‘new organized mind’. Father, mother as sex dual merely represent factor inequality pervading in fathomless nature.

-So, father, mother must be taken as mere instruments for new birth.

While during the birth process the ‘organizing mind’ collects the necessary minds (along with cells) for body fabrication , from where do these minds come from ? How do they cooperate with the ‘organizing mind’?

The riddle can be solved with pure logic.

Qualitatively inferior minds participate in the new game; which both have played earlier, somewhere else. Not that they have cordial relation but the tendency we see in the society, has its origin at the root of every birth. For the convenience and selfish end of all, cell minds come together and some of the cell minds do have a vengeance in their heart. They wait till the appropriate time to overpower the ‘organizing mind’.

The tendencies we see in the society, has its origin on the above lines, at the root of every birth.(Additional references in the book: 8.4, 8.5, 1.9)

Possibilities (With ref. To 1.9 illustrations.)

A. Begin with a much exaggerated possibility about Mr. and Mrs. A. When Mr. A was a child till 4 years, as an angry child, he hits his cells. One of the cells may deteriorate; revengefully turn as would be Mrs. A.  Conspire with some couple as father and mother and later re-enter in Mr. A’s life as his wife. (This can more possibly happen in case of Master A or Miss A).
B. These relationships may have roots in previous existence. (Previous birth or pre life period)
C. Mr. A strikes at his body cells to satisfy his emotions in which his body cells participate with growing inconvenience. A rebelling moment is reached, when a cell mutates. The mutiny is called cancer, or a son or daughter. (More information in point 14.7.2)
D. Many other permutations or combinations with respect to time and relationship may occur.

Analysis and interpretation of displeasures and evils

Accidents, sudden separations, so called untimely deaths need to be analyzed in the light of Nature’s over all tenets. Perhaps such so called mishaps signal settlement of reciprocal accounts.

Apparent strangeness in the argument

It sounds strange that the nearer relative breaths revenge or relative lack specific tenor in Nature. What can be the other surest way to recover all the past dues, except earning the confidence under the garb (cover) of nearest relative? Conversely, that anybody - say in this case , Mr. A strived breathlessly with pleasure for Mrs. A , Miss A, and Master A itself proves that Mr. A owned them this refund. Else, what can be their claim? What is the other possible logic? Nature has fabricated the shrewdest mechanism for establishing ‘just’ process of revenge, in the name of affection. (Revenge cycle in the single life is not rare. Yet long range cycles also exist).

14.3 Rebirth is not “must”

Long revenge phenomenon may be called a rebirth. But rebirth is not must. This point is elaborately discussed in other books by S. V. viz. God Re-considered , Marx proves Rebirth , Science and Philosophy , What Mind means , Know your Death.

14.4 Is reciprocation so exactly minute? Are there ‘Chances’, ‘Accidents’ in Nature?

If you go through the records of the world history from geological, physical, biological, chemical point of view, you will find Nature to be absolutely exact. Many a times, scientists term it as a chance, accident etc. Medicines are normally injected or swallowed to reach stomach. How they reach exactly the actual ailing destination?

Some references:-

1. Total account of body wonders – (Wonderfully Made, Dr. Sharp, M.D., and FRCS).
2. Wisdom of the body – (Man on his Nature , chapter 4)
3. Accidents excluded, complete causality favored – (Purpose of the Universe, chapter 8).
4. How cells recognize each other- (Purpose of the Universe, Point 11.2).

The above references clearly establish the exact and minute relationship in the nature.
Russian thinkers hold that cause and effect relationship is absolute. Causality means: every cause has its effect and no effect will be produced without appropriate cause.

Causality rules at all levels including philosophy:

According to Engels, grain to mountain, all entities are governed by the same law, -- action and reaction, cause and effect. Therefore; the effect that is produced while fabricating each cell of the body; cannot be without a just and an appropriate cause.
Engels specifically has stressed: In Biology as in History of human society, the same law holds good at every stage. But we prefer to dwell here on examples from the exact science, since here the quantities are accurately measurable and traceable. In clear scientific terms, effects produced in the biological field of body building are subjected to previous causes.

14.5. Cell movement Purposeful well directed.

It is seen earlier how cells recognize each other even after eighty years in single existence. They work for unity of body. But we have also seen that the same cell hits back on the individual to form cold or cancer. And we have also seen that cells in the same body, at the time of death try to save themselves. The behavior of the cells is undoubtedly by and large ‘self-motivated’ and their cooperation with the ‘organized mind’ is motivated by merely selfish end which often includes revenge.

14.11. All symbiosis, all alternatives, turn to parasitic.

At interval level, all the cells of the body cause pain during the last journey to death.

The slave cells rebel.

Manifest or emotional causes prick thorns from all sides

Externally, enemies act as open enemies, but are fate of friends any better?
Without exception, friends or relatives have to part, and every parting is sad. Nearer the person, the more the agony of parting pain, which remains unavoidable?
After the death of dear ones, life becoming intolerable is a common experience. Yet more common is the rebelling relative, in the name of affection.

Napoleon was doomed by Australian emperor, who first penetrated his life through his daughter and invaded his life under the pretext of marriage.

Chapter six ‘Equation of Happiness’ describes how all four alternatives of death are unilaterally painful.

There is no going back on the assertion that symbiosis in all forms shall turn to parasitic penalty unless, sense (education, nurturing) of equality and justice is introduced.

16.3. The real selfish should eschew inequalities.

Man is accused of being selfish. He is accused of being materialist. But in what sense he is materialist? Does he understand the laws of matter? Does he understand its implications? Does he know the implications of his being in material frame? Unfortunately, 90% of his important functions are not controlled by him. Egoistic ignorance has termed it as ‘involuntary actions’. A man needs a doctor to tell him that his own organs do not need sugar. Doctor knows his organs in general sense. There are so many mysteries for doctors too, growingly when frontiers of cells and viruses are reached. Indeed, the penalties of inequality are engrained in every grain of man.

Inequality in cells nature and behavior

Recollect the reference from “Paths of Science” (P-31). We are told about the inequalities spread over different parts of cell. Time movement of anybody reminds of this fragrant fact. The author on page 60 says, “The cells of some organs are harder, less complex and more stable. Irreversible changes take a longer time to come to these harder cells. The cells of other organs are delicate and vulnerable. They begin to disintegrate sooner, giving rise to earlier irreversible changes. Some cells live quite some time, after their owner’s death...The epithelia of skin, for instance and the cells of the hairs and nails behave this way. The nerve cells of the brain, particularly, the cerebral cortex, are the most delicate and unstable. Irreversible changes occur in them very soon after death.”

What a paradox!! Nails and hairs comparatively remain detached. For this detachment, they (don’t die but) continue to grow after death. On the other hand, brain cells, the helping despot of mind, the supreme commander throughout life, the delicate, un-changing, un-movable depot of higher hierarchy, die quicker. The growing evidence of biological death as compared to clinical death and cell differentiation at the time of death, as shown above are eye opening indicators. On page 67 of the treatise, the author asks “The question arises, why the cells of central nervous system, and particular of those of the central cortex, are so fragile that the change in them becomes irreversible in the short time of six minutes.”

The question, why cortex cells are so fragile so as to die in six minutes, is not answered, and after two pages of jottings, author on page eleven declares that the cell die to “save themselves.” What an explanation!! Can it be accepted without assuming surviving mind to the cell? And again, compare the two quotations above. Some cells outlive death admittedly, and others survive to ‘save themselves’ according to the same author.

In a single individual body, Nature has packed all the lessons. She shows us the horrors and penalties of inequalities, she tells rewards of patient detachment. If the mind cannot accept democracy and treat its own cell subjects just fully, what right has the mind to speak of democracy, justice and right in the external world?

To avoid sacrifice for society, the selfish man puts forth the excuses that I shall serve my family instead of serving the society. Such a selfish soul is advised to be more selfish, and still go within, to find out the implications of the inner laws, within his real self.

16.4. Marxist (materialistic) thinkers capable of rethinking.

We have quoted Marxist (materialist) authorities without any disrespect or implied satire. We are submitting to their honest thinkers to reconsider a part of their stand, when our own inferences lead us to acceptance of equality. A deeper thinking will convince the unprejudiced thinker how this suggested clue alone is the redeeming way. In the age of quantum mechanics, new inferences have emerged. In the work ‘Lenin and Modern National Society, (page 204) the Marxist thinker has said “Unlike other philosophic systems, dialectical materialism does not oppose modern science as a set of rigid propositions given once and for all; its content is enriched and its form changed with every great scientific discovery.”

S.V.’s modest approach:

We do not profess to have invented any great scientific discovery. But certainly, we have drawn the logical inferences from the findings of scientific thinkers like Pavlov, Einstein, Heisenberg and others. Let them be accepted or rejected, with reasons

16.7   From ‘ego’ step down to ‘equality’.

Marxists have spoken about law of contradiction in Nature. We have shown the roots of paradoxes and cycles to be ghosts of inequalities. Elements of ego attempt a break through, with the result that peace, tranquility, equality is disturbed. This is disturbance against natural justice.

What is way out? How can we reconcile?

When natural justice is ignored, when internal cycles of revenge remain unconcealed, it gives impression of paradox. A prudent man has to learn that every pleasure shall be chased by ghost of displeasure. Howsoever, much the beneficiary endeavors to abuse the law by misnomers as ‘ghost’ or paradoxes, such abuses amount to temporary relief, born out of shifting the plane. Abuses hardly absolve the law-hit homosapian. Once this is realized, deciphered, every particle of body should be considered a just and equitable ‘recreating (shaping)’ according to natural law. Condemning the natural law as, paradox, cancer, parasite is only to perpetuate the cycle of revenge with multiplying offences to receive the new penalty in time to come.

“Turn within”: Entropy (second law of thermodynamics.)

In a bid to secure cheap solutions some investigators give new post-dated checks. The latest of such dishonored check is anti-malaria campaign. Report from “Times of India” Bombay edition, dated 4-12-79 says “In the ding dong battle with the man, the mosquito has once again revealed a new strategy which, unless countered quickly and effectively, can spell disaster. For the fight against malaria in recent years has been mainly based on a powerful drug called chloroquine, and this nostrum has lost its punch. A report by the U.N. environmental program says that this protozoan parasite has developed high resistance to the drug. This comes on top of the disclosure that 43 species of malaria spreading anopheline mosquitoes are resistant to a range of potent insecticide including DDT, BHC and carbamates.

After spending astronomical sums on various projects, authorities have realized that it is neither desirable, nor feasible to attempt malaria eradication by conventional means. All that can be aimed for the present to control its depredations and reduce its severity.”

Let us stop our vain fight against Nature and natural laws. End of this Universe is destined to be entropy, which compels equality. (See points 13.8 and 12.4.)

Entropy means equality.

A German chose the Greek word entropy to mean ‘turn within’. (Ref. Cybernetics A to Z, page 105). Turn within then. Address each of your cells, persuade him to a new realization, and make him participate in your heightened existence. In consequence, you shall have blessings of your colleagues; an experience un-comparable.

Here we end with a quotation from a great doctor. Which comes at the end of the book ‘Rich Ambitious and Healthy’ (Written by S.V.) Dr. Kenneth Walker is an impeachable authority in modern science. Yet, his observations would fly in the face of optimists clinging to the day dream, that wonder drugs one day will win Nature and relieve them of their ills.

Dr. Walker asseverates:-

We have measured the sun, and because we have discovered that it is only a star of the second magnitude, we no longer reverence its splendor. God has become an unnecessary hypothesis to the possessor of a little natural philosophy and has been eliminated from the Universe. Many of our fears are due to our illusions concerning ourselves and the lack of any time in our lives. We see ourselves as the sole representatives of mind traveling through space-time in a dead and soulless universe. Sometimes, we may boast that we are conquering ‘Nature’, but Nature does not even fight; she is secure in her possession of us. We may think that with a little more cleverness and contriving, we shall be able to live out the span of our lives, not only with security, but in comfort. This is an absurdity, for there can be no security and no certainty of comfort for anything that breaths and moves.

CELL WITH MIND NOT UNDERSTOOD. (MIND POWER - 4)

(Excerpts from book: MIND POWER (1980) CH 9, Author - Swami Vijnananand (S.V.), Manashakti publication)

 CELL

·         Some scientist say that plants too feel.
·         Laws of Biology hold good at every step, though they become complex.

9.1       Cell, the mysterious links.

Though, comparatively imperfect, the knowledge of one cell can be applied to other types of cells. However there are two general classes of cells.

1)        Prokaryotic cell – Typical of bacteria and blue – green algae
2)        Eukaryotic cell - Found in all other organisms, plants and animals.

It is suggested that plant and animal cells have been derived from the early cell, or more likely, both forms might have a common ancestor. If so, the intermediate stage remains a mystery

9.3       Chemical picture of cell.

(I)                            Both plant and animal cells contain organic substances and mineral salts. The organic substances, whose composition is very complex, are represented by proteins, nucleic acids, carbohydrates, fats and fat like substances known as lipids.

(II)                         Liver cell in human body:- In the human body, for example, liver cell contains
·         60 % water.
·         12 % protein
·         5 %  fat
·         2 %  nucleic acid
·         1 % (or 21 %?) carbohydrates and other substances.

(iii) Proteins are the most important and indispensable constituents of cell they contain:-
·         50 to 55 % of carbon.
·         25 t0 30 % of oxygen.
·         15 to 19 %  of sulfur
·         Occasionally – iron, phosphorous, iodine, zinc, magnesium, and other elements.

(iv) Certain rare derivatives apart, nucleic acid derivatives contain:-

-  5   nitrogenous bases.
-  2   purines – adenine (A), guanine (G)
-  3   pyrimidine – cytosine (C), uracil (U), thymine (T)

There are two main types of nucleic acids.

·         DNA (De-oxyribo Nucleic Acid), containing the sugar de-oxyribose with adenine – thymine and guanine – cytosine as bases.
·         RNA (Ribo Nucleic acid), which contains ribose sugar and adenine, guanine, cytosine, and uracil (instead of thymine) as nitrogen base.

9.4       Cell division.

The vitally important process of cell division occurs either through karyokinesis or through mitosis. (Cell division)
(Karyokinesis = kernel i.e. cover, movement)

(i)                 Division of cell begins after a more or less protracted (longer than expected) period, known as interkinesis or interphase; the operative condition of the cell, when its inherent physiological functions are most active. In the interkinetic nucleus, the chromosomes are not visible, but instead appear as long, thin, intervened threads.

(ii)At this stage the cell is already being prepared for mitosis. At a definite stage of interphase, known as synthetic, the quality of DNA in the nucleus doubles.

iii) During the preparation for mitosis, the cell center divides and begins moving apart to the opposites or poles of the cell. The chromosomes threads coil up into spirals, thicken and become visible under the ordinary microscope.

iv)The nucleolus and nuclear membrane gradually disappears and a spindle is formed. This first stage of mitosis is known as the prophase.

(v)    In the second stage called the metaphase (fig. 5), the chromosomes arrange themselves into the equatorial plane of the cell in the form of a star.

(vi)  The third stage of mitosis, known as the Ana-phase begins when the chromosomes, already split, separate. (fig.6)

(vii)At this stage the space between the chromosomes becomes greater and greater, the threads between spindles extending between the centriol become shorter and the two halves of each chromosome gradually migrate to the poles of the cell.

(viii) The fourth and final stage of division is called the telophase. (fig. 7 & 8).During this, the chromosomes uncoil, the nucleus re appears and nuclear membranes surround each group of daughter chromosomes. Thus, the exact division of material of each chromosome is made between the daughter nuclei. In the cytoplasm of each daughter cell, a new division of the centriols takes place and a membrane forms between the two cells obtained as result of the division. Morphologically the telophase resembles the prophase, except that there are now two cells instead of the original one. Each daughter cell is smaller than the maternal one, but gradually grows and attains the dimensions and space typical of the cell of the tissue concerned

More information continues……

The duration of each phase of mitosis and its frequency are dissimilar to different cells and vary greatly. The younger the tissue, however, the more frequently the cell divides.
Mitotic activity depends on the nature of the tissue and on its physiological condition. It is particularly intensive during growth and regeneration. Hormones and other system regulators of the organism have a great effect. In many tissues mitosis is not observed, as in the liver. That does not mean that liver cells can’t divide. If for instance, a piece is cut from liver of a rat, mitosis will occur immediately along the line of cut and the livers will quickly and completely regenerate.
The average length of the principal stage of karyokinesis in human cell is as follows :-

·         30 to 60 minutes for prophase
·         02 to 10 minutes for metaphase
·         03 to 15 minutes for anaphase
·         30           minutes for telophase.

(iv)During division cells are very sensitive to various environmental influences, particularly to temperature. The optimal temperature for human cell division is 37 degree centigrade; deviation from that, either above or below, inhibits (restricts) mitosis. The dividing cell is likewise sensitive to poisons and to radiant energy, which is the basis for treating malignant tumors by ionizing radiation.

(v)It should also be noted that certain highly differentiated cell have lost their capacity to divide, as far instance, blood cells, after existing for a certain time, they disintegrate and special blood forming organs produce new cells to replace them.
Nerves cells are formed only during embroil developments after birth they grow but do not as a rule divide.

A phenomenon known as “amitosis” or direct division is sometimes encountered, which is not properly speaking a means of cell division, by simply a pinching or fragmentation of the nucleus.  Amitosis is rare in higher organisms and many biologists even doubt its existence.

9.5       Analogy of chemicals but not of life.

Process of amoeba: - Is it possible to say that amoeba is conscious?  Yes, certainly. Its acts are very much like those which are talked of as conscious in us and the higher animals. It has quite a clear reaction to changes in degree of light. For example: - -It seems to have power of controlling its motion

·         It makes selection of food it does not take inside his body whatever comes in his way.
·         It gives no attention for ex. To hard grains or stones, which would give trouble to digestion?
·         We tend to say that behavior of this sort is conscious behavior.

However one can take a view that this behavior is like a machine, which is the outcome of the laws of physics and chemistry. Is it possible to make something whose behavior is more or less like the behavior of amoeba? If a drop of chloroform be supported in the liquid and on coming up against a small grain of wax they will get all-round them very much as amoeba gets round its food. Again by using certain chemical reaction, it is possible for the process of cell division i.e. similar process the amoeba itself into more amoebas.

The above similar example does not make amoeba’s behavior clearer to us. It gives us the idea that it is possible that the behavior of amoeba is like that of a machine.

9.6 Physical behavior: - Eight alternatives against incoming substances.
Army rule: There is an old rule for leading comfortable army life.

If it moves, salute it.
If it does not move, pick it up.
If it is too big to pick up, paint it.

Cell response to incoming substances, eight alternatives: The possible response of a cell to an incoming substance has similar diversity.

(1)               The substance can be metabolized and used as a fuel.
(2)               Incorporated into whatever is being built at the time.
(3)               Copied.
(4)               Complemented by synthesis of antibody, or
(5)               Antitoxin engulfed (completely surrounded) in resin or amyloidal (non-nitrogenous starchy food)
(6)               Used as an inducer, or
(7)               Bizarre (strange) morphogenesis as a prelude (pre-action) to one of the other processes.
(8)               Rejected from the very beginning or by excretion.

These various responses are not rigidly distinguishable from each other but overlap intricately. The shrewdness of cell is exhibited in the manner of its response.

9.7       Sherrington; the noble prize winner and others discussed mind of the cell. Cell has a mind to learn. Single cell without sense organ and nervous system can learn. As per Dr. Sherrington, the noble prize winner scientist, there are observers with skill (skilled observers) , who after devoting patient study to the motor behavior of a such single cell conclude that microscopic single cell life, without sense organ without nervous system can learn. The emphasis here is to be focused on observer’s skill to reach to the said conclusion.

The famous physicist E. Winger observes: The present laws of physics are at least incomplete without translation into terms of mental phenomenon. More likely they are inaccurate. The inaccuracy increasing the role which life plays in the phenomenon considered.

Noble prize winner chemist Szebt Cyorgyi reiterates: In many search for the secret of life, I ended up with atoms and electrons which have no life at all. Somewhere along the line LIFE HAS RUN OUT THROUGH MY FINGERS. So in my old age, I am now retracing (to withdraw a statement) my steps.

9.8       Louis Pasteur: Life existed during eternity and not matter.

I have been looking for spontaneous generation for twenty years without discovering it. No, I don’t judge it impossible, but what allows you to make it the origin of life?
You place matter before life and decide that matter has existed for all eternity.
How do you know the incessant (non-stop, continuous) progress of science will not compel scientists…… to consider that……. Life exerted during eternity and not matter?
You pass from matter to life because your intelligence of today can not conceive things otherwise. HOW DO YOU KNOW THAT IN TEN THOUSAND YEARS ONE WILL NOT CONSIDER IT MORE LIKELY THAT MATTER HAS EMERGED FROM LIFE?

In 1955, Contrat reported separation and reunion of TM virus. Dr. Asimov’s comments were as follows. - If the two fractions of the original virus (after separation) were then mixed, (Only) about one percent of the original (virus) was restored. Apparently, the nucleic acid rejoins the protein in the mixture but usually in an incorrect and useless manner. One out of hundred re-unions however clicks into place correctly and the intact virus molecule is restored.
By no means has this amounted to “creating of life.”

C.G.Taylor Ex. Advisor BBC, -- Scientists cannot create life. The scientists do not really aim to create life, he simply aims to provide the conditions in which life can create itself.

The book MIND POWER says: Let science remain at its honorable place without transgressing (going beyond moral/legal limits) its legitimate frontiers unless it chooses to expand the frontiers to the limits of life. In other words, let science open door to non-matter with a well-come or leave it out to others to consider.

Summary:

-          Here we see the broad outline of the cell composition as well as division. If mere mechanical view of the cell working is taken as a basis, appropriate explanation of cell functioning would not be possible.

-          In order to provide logical explanation of the cell working either science has to accept ‘mind’ as scientific entity or leave the explanation of ‘life’ out of its scope.
