How one should behave in proper way! (E. O. M. -14)

Swami Vijnananand provided guidance to the teenagers through series of discourses on various subjects. In one such series of discourses he talked about the behavioral aspects. Our mind is expressed through the behavior. “Why one behaves in certain way” and “How should one behave in proper way” were the subjects covered. While dealing with the human behavior, he related its origin to the process of evolution of mind. His views expressed in informal language are summarized as follows:

What do we (New way philosophy) want to say about the evolutionism?

What they are saying is that amongst all the stages in the movements which took place in nature, the non-material (Ajada), the so- called non-material was created from material (jada) – to say this in their own terms, living beings were created from non-living. But what we say it isn’t so. We have already shown the reason to you until now. Now understand what I am placing before you.

The basic rule of jada (matter) is that, speed & heat are convertible in both ways. Then what is the rule of heat? It is the same rule as that of speed. In the laws of speed, Newton has told that while you are pushing the table with your finger, even the table is pushing you simultaneously. (Action is equal to and opposite reaction). See it creates a depression (pressure, dent) on the finger with which you are pushing the table. A bigger thing giving to a smaller one and a smaller thing giving to the bigger one, always goes on. It won’t be right to deny it.

It means that both of them are living together or by coexisting and adjusting with each other. Similar is the case with speed and with heat.

So the law of heat & speed tells you that both of them will reach an even state in the end.

What will happen in the whole of this universe? One day the movement of the whole universe is going to come to a standstill. That itself is called as the ‘state of entropy.’ The second law of Thermodynamics tells the same thing. (Energy flows from higher to lower level till it attains entropy)

Finally everything in this universe is going to enter the state of equilibrium. Everything is going to have one temperature. The stage and the speed of everything, the intermixing and internal stirring, is going to stop and everything in the world is going to enter one phase. This is the natural attribute of matter. You should take this into consideration.

All that got created was from matter.’ Every matter has action. Every action has a re-action. From this battle between action and reaction, the state of ‘Entropy’ is going to arrive eventually. The state of ‘Entropy’ is the very Dharma (characteristic) of the matter. Now the evolutionists have once for all accepted this fundamental theorem. There are no conflicting opinions there.

Now if you have propounded the theory of communism, that is, the theory of equality, if you accept that the matter is going to finally enter the state of Sarva Shanti ( total peace) and Sarva samata (total equality), then how can Darwin’s theorem of ‘might is right’ be true? If the basic law of ‘might is right’ is prevalent in the world, it cannot ever establish equality.

Just remember what I am saying. If the matter says that I am always going to fight and the one who wins in the fight will become mighty, how did progress of evolution go up to the stage of humans? What was your definition of progress? You have defined progress in a wrong way.

This is the real question. And if the evolutionism is unable to give a satisfactory answer to this, then the situation will arise when we will have to put materialistic evolutionism aside.

But don’t we see ‘might is right’? We do see it like that. But I don’t think of that state as a permanent stage. There was a saying in the old times. See, I am giving analogies.

The (flame of) lamp gets bigger before going off’.
The second analogy is that of a cat. If you catch a cat in a corner, it will resort to attack finally.

Fundamental law of matter is the state of entropy only; it is not ‘might is right’
The true law instead of that is of peace, adjustment, adaptation.

We have seen the mutual adjustment as the way to progress. We call it as ‘Symbiosis’. (we) term that as the state of peace, state of adjustment. And if that is the state, then you have to take that state into consideration. It won’t be right to go by ‘might is right’. You have to believe that the one who adjusts has the ability to change the world. The one who adjusts can reach the real next stage in evolution.

The evolutionists say that if you learn to make adjustment and if that adjustment is accepted by nature, then you can reach the next stage in evolution.

So remember, what should a person do? We have to make adjustments. What does the nature do? It suddenly gives him a prize. It is termed as mutation. While describing evolution it is said that a person makes an adjustment. Then what does the power of nature do? It selects the one who has the maximum ability of adjustment, out of all of them.

But again our question is, what if the one who does adjustment, is a sweet talker and a cunning person. And then even he will win. So the fact remains again that the cunning person wins. Hence we have to arrive at his motive. His motive should be that of peace. And hence, it is not sufficient for the person to make an adjustment; the nature also has to approve your adjustment.

The question is, what is the basic principle for natural selection?

So. if you accept that there is equality in the original form of nature, then it cannot be stupid. And hence it will look at the motive. It will select the only one who has the intent (motive) of equality.

See how correctly we put forward this. If equality is the final word of the nature, then to whom will the nature choose? Who would it elect? Who would it select? It will select the one who has the intent of equality; we have to draw such a simple conclusion.

Then who will have that motive? Would it be with the inanimate object? And if it is not with an inanimate , who will have it? Motive is the characteristic of Mind.
If the motive is with the inanimate then why don’t you say that every material particle has a mind of its own?

The one who is struggling in the evolution, the one making adjustments, possesses life. It is the intellect or the inspiration behind the motive. When environment changes, the organism makes conscious efforts to adapt to the surroundings’. This isnwhat Lamarck says. It is right. But conscious efforts? OK. So he tries wholeheartedly. Yet has Darwin denied it at all? You will come to know about that, when he gives an example in the following pages in the book.

According Darwin’s evolutionism, they have stated while giving an examples of giraffe, “Ancestral giraffes with variable length of neck, (cause of variation is not explained.)” implying some giraffes had longer necks. Some giraffes had shorter necks. Giraffe is that animal with long neck. He is able to eat the foliage at a height, as high as his height takes him and he won’t be able to eat if he is short.

I have told you in the beginning of the lesson, you don’t know about the zero. You don’t even know properly the number before one or after ten very clearly…What happened to them? You say that we do not know that at all……Then we say, what was the fault of the giraffes with shorter necks? It was not their fault. Then what was the virtue of the bigger ones? Adaptation, they adjusted on their own. What does it mean they did? What was the adjustment they did? Why don’t you tell us in definite terms?

So, if there is no motive, no effort, then what did they do when it is said that they made efforts, made adjustments? Otherwise, why would someone adjust if there is no motive behind?

The motivation is independent of material. If I mix up motivation & material, then such confusions are bound to arise. Moreover, we do not know the cause in the first place. We do not know why the necks were short. If, therefore, we go on explaining the philosophy, what purpose does it serve? The confusion is here itself.

I am making no change in the main theme of Darwinism. Living being has knowledge which says ‘I want pleasure’. The living being has a motion. According to our principle of evolutionism, the root cause of this motion is pleasure. The animate longs for the state of happiness & that’s the reason he gets sorrow along with it. Here he is bound to get misery as the reaction. When he will get to know this (equation of happiness) – whoever this creature is, - he has acquired some basic knowledge, but the rest of it is ignorance.

That is why he is making the ‘so called’ progress. Hence he is getting the pleasure of motion. Ultimately he is going to get pleasure and pain as action-reaction. As that creature will go on increasing in size, more complex & dynamic, he, that is, humanity is going to get more grief. We are experiencing it today. And even science has stated the same. Many of its proofs are given over in our e book ‘Buddhiyoga’.

We are getting those experiences in modern times. Where is the peace today? Miseries of the dynamic life have been created in the form of reaction. So now we have to acquire that ‘knowledge’ (to know) why we were born? Why has this Universe come into existence? And how this nature is going to move towards the end? What will happen if he connects this knowledge to his life, instead of clinging to the ignorance? Well, then definitely the state of equilibrium will come about.

The theory which we are presenting is valid from the perspectives of science, religion & communism.

We demonstrated to you that if people interpret Darwinism in a wrong sense merely as evolution of the ifeless, of the inanimate, that will result only in creating proofs which are opposed to each other. If matter is going to assume the form of entropy eventually, if the motion that gets created in the matter is going to be converted into the state of entropy, how is that going to happen?

From one way the evolution theory says that there is a motive to the state of matter that makes efforts as well as to the state of being animate which struggles. Further it says nature selects him. This implies that even the live individual has a motive and the nature too has a motive – merely for making a selection. If it is so, what is the motive? If you have accepted it as an even state (entropy) itself, then even the religion states the same, science states the same ; and if you assume a motive in the case of an animate, it means you have already accepted non-matter.

However, from one angle you say that the matter has no motive. As You say that nothing will be moved unless moved . While laying down the law of motion you have said that matter itself as such has no motion of its own, it also means it has no motive as well.

After all this, the definition we are making of the living creatures, the other proofs and the adjustment we are telling - should be accepted. You need to state that Darwinism leads to the self-destruction because of the lack of logic. The research by Darwin is very good. Still however, the theorems which he has proposed are bouncing on him. He has to swallow his own words.

Hence you need to have a well- meaning motive. That motive should be full of knowledge. We saw this third type of proof over here. The one who couldn’t acquire knowledge on his own, should submit himself wholeheartedly to the one who has acquired the knowledge. This is what we get to see in nature or should be seen.

Here we need to carry out research on the above points. We need to acquire proofs for this hypothesis..

Critical self-introspection, acceptance of own faults and be ready to willingly suffer the unpleasant

consequence of own karma is the essence of self purification to make a progress in the life of an individual .

Our noble desires only can fetch us noble reward.

Swami Vijnananand not only preached the importance of self-purification but practised this concept in his life

till the last moment. His desire of highest self-purification is reflected in the prayer he has written on the

opening page of all the books he wrote
.

Pardon me not, God,

Punish me for every fault,

For a single unjust pardon,

Will liquidate almighty Lord”!

Organized Mind fabricates an "Individual". MIND POWER - 9. (Concluding Part)

Excerpts from book: MIND POWER (1980) CH 14 - 16, Author - Swami Vijnananand (S.V.), Manashakti publication.

‘Organized Mind’ fabricates an ‘individual’, builds around it a net of cells. The fabrication of the individual and net of cells around it is done at ‘whatever quality organizing mind deserves’. Yes! you , I, all of us are surrounded by ghosts , cell by cell , animal by animal , man by man in which individual rests.

14.1. Cell matter common, cell mind ‘as I deserve’

In the following discussions, we have to understand point by point, how the relationship of mind and other surrounding minds make a mark.

Touch of life creates wonderful transformation in a tiny piece of matter:

Body of each cell is comparatively a dead matter. How a touch of life brings about magical transformation to the piece of matter is illustrated below.

Catalase is an enzyme which in living protoplasm accelerates the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide into oxygen and water.

The reaction can be accelerated by inorganic iron too. But the action of iron is very weak.

However by uniting iron with special organic substance “pyrrole”, we can make that reaction thousands times more effective.

Catalase, a natural enzyme, also contains iron with pyrolle, but its action is about ten millions times stronger because it contains in addition a specific protein. This specific difference makes miracle.

Catalyst power of one mg of iron contained in the catalase complex (of life full protoplasm) is equal to that of ten tones of inorganic iron.

That is the miracle of a touch of life to a matter.

Touch of Life gives ten million times strength to the tiny piece. This is a phenomenon which science can’t explain.

To this transcending (that which goes beyond normal limit) power, we call Mind.

Since each mind (with its varying desires) differs, it brings in consideration of “deserving”. The external energy at material level, may be common , but the total energy would vary.(as per mind component)
For all our advanced techniques, we have not yet approached the level of rationalism possessed by living Nature.

Two minds in one body:

Before a baby is born, in pre natal stage, the face of the mother turns lustrous, even in case of unwanted child. The pulse rate of the child and mother are different. By all indications, it means two minds in one body.

14.2. At birth, matter and minds meet as they deserve.

14.2.1. Let us check-up references to birth process independent of parents. (This is not very common phenomenon, yet we have noted here the well-known uncommon facts.)

* Parthenogenesis – definition (virgin birth, Nature’s short cut), Development of an egg cell without being fertilized by a sperm cell, it is not a primitive state of affairs. (Dictionary of Biology, T-250, page 172 and Riddle of science, P-23, page 58)

1 Christ was born without the male partner – a clear case of auto birth.
2 King Dasharatha, the father of Ram distributed liquid (payasa) among his three queens, which was supposed to give him sons. Though the cause of birth was that particular liquid, Dasharatha did not consume it, clear case of auto birth.
3 According to one tale a sweat drop of Hanuman helped a birth. A curios cross breed from crocodile type mother. The son was called Makaradhwaj.
4 In case of Krishna too, He entered the appropriate birth place. This was told by the father of Krishna himself; (Bhagawat, part 10, chapter 2).
5 Mahabharata tells us many such stories.
6 Other religions frequently endorse such phenomenon.
7 In the issue of ‘Therapist’ Jan’1911, there is a story of Madam Blavtsky. After her death, she entered into a fourteen years boy, who was dead that time.

All the above may be overlooked and we turn to the present picture in search of corroboration.

14.2.2 The route of birth is clear.

Bodies of the mother and father provide raw material of matter for the ‘new organized mind’. Father, mother as sex dual merely represent factor inequality pervading in fathomless nature.

-So, father, mother must be taken as mere instruments for new birth.

While during the birth process the ‘organizing mind’ collects the necessary minds (along with cells) for body fabrication , from where do these minds come from ? How do they cooperate with the ‘organizing mind’?

The riddle can be solved with pure logic.

Qualitatively inferior minds participate in the new game; which both have played earlier, somewhere else. Not that they have cordial relation but the tendency we see in the society, has its origin at the root of every birth. For the convenience and selfish end of all, cell minds come together and some of the cell minds do have a vengeance in their heart. They wait till the appropriate time to overpower the ‘organizing mind’.

The tendencies we see in the society, has its origin on the above lines, at the root of every birth.(Additional references in the book: 8.4, 8.5, 1.9)

Possibilities (With ref. To 1.9 illustrations.)

A. Begin with a much exaggerated possibility about Mr. and Mrs. A. When Mr. A was a child till 4 years, as an angry child, he hits his cells. One of the cells may deteriorate; revengefully turn as would be Mrs. A.  Conspire with some couple as father and mother and later re-enter in Mr. A’s life as his wife. (This can more possibly happen in case of Master A or Miss A).
B. These relationships may have roots in previous existence. (Previous birth or pre life period)
C. Mr. A strikes at his body cells to satisfy his emotions in which his body cells participate with growing inconvenience. A rebelling moment is reached, when a cell mutates. The mutiny is called cancer, or a son or daughter. (More information in point 14.7.2)
D. Many other permutations or combinations with respect to time and relationship may occur.

Analysis and interpretation of displeasures and evils

Accidents, sudden separations, so called untimely deaths need to be analyzed in the light of Nature’s over all tenets. Perhaps such so called mishaps signal settlement of reciprocal accounts.

Apparent strangeness in the argument

It sounds strange that the nearer relative breaths revenge or relative lack specific tenor in Nature. What can be the other surest way to recover all the past dues, except earning the confidence under the garb (cover) of nearest relative? Conversely, that anybody - say in this case , Mr. A strived breathlessly with pleasure for Mrs. A , Miss A, and Master A itself proves that Mr. A owned them this refund. Else, what can be their claim? What is the other possible logic? Nature has fabricated the shrewdest mechanism for establishing ‘just’ process of revenge, in the name of affection. (Revenge cycle in the single life is not rare. Yet long range cycles also exist).

14.3 Rebirth is not “must”

Long revenge phenomenon may be called a rebirth. But rebirth is not must. This point is elaborately discussed in other books by S. V. viz. God Re-considered , Marx proves Rebirth , Science and Philosophy , What Mind means , Know your Death.

14.4 Is reciprocation so exactly minute? Are there ‘Chances’, ‘Accidents’ in Nature?

If you go through the records of the world history from geological, physical, biological, chemical point of view, you will find Nature to be absolutely exact. Many a times, scientists term it as a chance, accident etc. Medicines are normally injected or swallowed to reach stomach. How they reach exactly the actual ailing destination?

Some references:-

1. Total account of body wonders – (Wonderfully Made, Dr. Sharp, M.D., and FRCS).
2. Wisdom of the body – (Man on his Nature , chapter 4)
3. Accidents excluded, complete causality favored – (Purpose of the Universe, chapter 8).
4. How cells recognize each other- (Purpose of the Universe, Point 11.2).

The above references clearly establish the exact and minute relationship in the nature.
Russian thinkers hold that cause and effect relationship is absolute. Causality means: every cause has its effect and no effect will be produced without appropriate cause.

Causality rules at all levels including philosophy:

According to Engels, grain to mountain, all entities are governed by the same law, -- action and reaction, cause and effect. Therefore; the effect that is produced while fabricating each cell of the body; cannot be without a just and an appropriate cause.
Engels specifically has stressed: In Biology as in History of human society, the same law holds good at every stage. But we prefer to dwell here on examples from the exact science, since here the quantities are accurately measurable and traceable. In clear scientific terms, effects produced in the biological field of body building are subjected to previous causes.

14.5. Cell movement Purposeful well directed.

It is seen earlier how cells recognize each other even after eighty years in single existence. They work for unity of body. But we have also seen that the same cell hits back on the individual to form cold or cancer. And we have also seen that cells in the same body, at the time of death try to save themselves. The behavior of the cells is undoubtedly by and large ‘self-motivated’ and their cooperation with the ‘organized mind’ is motivated by merely selfish end which often includes revenge.

14.11. All symbiosis, all alternatives, turn to parasitic.

At interval level, all the cells of the body cause pain during the last journey to death.

The slave cells rebel.

Manifest or emotional causes prick thorns from all sides

Externally, enemies act as open enemies, but are fate of friends any better?
Without exception, friends or relatives have to part, and every parting is sad. Nearer the person, the more the agony of parting pain, which remains unavoidable?
After the death of dear ones, life becoming intolerable is a common experience. Yet more common is the rebelling relative, in the name of affection.

Napoleon was doomed by Australian emperor, who first penetrated his life through his daughter and invaded his life under the pretext of marriage.

Chapter six ‘Equation of Happiness’ describes how all four alternatives of death are unilaterally painful.

There is no going back on the assertion that symbiosis in all forms shall turn to parasitic penalty unless, sense (education, nurturing) of equality and justice is introduced.

16.3. The real selfish should eschew inequalities.

Man is accused of being selfish. He is accused of being materialist. But in what sense he is materialist? Does he understand the laws of matter? Does he understand its implications? Does he know the implications of his being in material frame? Unfortunately, 90% of his important functions are not controlled by him. Egoistic ignorance has termed it as ‘involuntary actions’. A man needs a doctor to tell him that his own organs do not need sugar. Doctor knows his organs in general sense. There are so many mysteries for doctors too, growingly when frontiers of cells and viruses are reached. Indeed, the penalties of inequality are engrained in every grain of man.

Inequality in cells nature and behavior

Recollect the reference from “Paths of Science” (P-31). We are told about the inequalities spread over different parts of cell. Time movement of anybody reminds of this fragrant fact. The author on page 60 says, “The cells of some organs are harder, less complex and more stable. Irreversible changes take a longer time to come to these harder cells. The cells of other organs are delicate and vulnerable. They begin to disintegrate sooner, giving rise to earlier irreversible changes. Some cells live quite some time, after their owner’s death...The epithelia of skin, for instance and the cells of the hairs and nails behave this way. The nerve cells of the brain, particularly, the cerebral cortex, are the most delicate and unstable. Irreversible changes occur in them very soon after death.”

What a paradox!! Nails and hairs comparatively remain detached. For this detachment, they (don’t die but) continue to grow after death. On the other hand, brain cells, the helping despot of mind, the supreme commander throughout life, the delicate, un-changing, un-movable depot of higher hierarchy, die quicker. The growing evidence of biological death as compared to clinical death and cell differentiation at the time of death, as shown above are eye opening indicators. On page 67 of the treatise, the author asks “The question arises, why the cells of central nervous system, and particular of those of the central cortex, are so fragile that the change in them becomes irreversible in the short time of six minutes.”

The question, why cortex cells are so fragile so as to die in six minutes, is not answered, and after two pages of jottings, author on page eleven declares that the cell die to “save themselves.” What an explanation!! Can it be accepted without assuming surviving mind to the cell? And again, compare the two quotations above. Some cells outlive death admittedly, and others survive to ‘save themselves’ according to the same author.

In a single individual body, Nature has packed all the lessons. She shows us the horrors and penalties of inequalities, she tells rewards of patient detachment. If the mind cannot accept democracy and treat its own cell subjects just fully, what right has the mind to speak of democracy, justice and right in the external world?

To avoid sacrifice for society, the selfish man puts forth the excuses that I shall serve my family instead of serving the society. Such a selfish soul is advised to be more selfish, and still go within, to find out the implications of the inner laws, within his real self.

16.4. Marxist (materialistic) thinkers capable of rethinking.

We have quoted Marxist (materialist) authorities without any disrespect or implied satire. We are submitting to their honest thinkers to reconsider a part of their stand, when our own inferences lead us to acceptance of equality. A deeper thinking will convince the unprejudiced thinker how this suggested clue alone is the redeeming way. In the age of quantum mechanics, new inferences have emerged. In the work ‘Lenin and Modern National Society, (page 204) the Marxist thinker has said “Unlike other philosophic systems, dialectical materialism does not oppose modern science as a set of rigid propositions given once and for all; its content is enriched and its form changed with every great scientific discovery.”

S.V.’s modest approach:

We do not profess to have invented any great scientific discovery. But certainly, we have drawn the logical inferences from the findings of scientific thinkers like Pavlov, Einstein, Heisenberg and others. Let them be accepted or rejected, with reasons

16.7   From ‘ego’ step down to ‘equality’.

Marxists have spoken about law of contradiction in Nature. We have shown the roots of paradoxes and cycles to be ghosts of inequalities. Elements of ego attempt a break through, with the result that peace, tranquility, equality is disturbed. This is disturbance against natural justice.

What is way out? How can we reconcile?

When natural justice is ignored, when internal cycles of revenge remain unconcealed, it gives impression of paradox. A prudent man has to learn that every pleasure shall be chased by ghost of displeasure. Howsoever, much the beneficiary endeavors to abuse the law by misnomers as ‘ghost’ or paradoxes, such abuses amount to temporary relief, born out of shifting the plane. Abuses hardly absolve the law-hit homosapian. Once this is realized, deciphered, every particle of body should be considered a just and equitable ‘recreating (shaping)’ according to natural law. Condemning the natural law as, paradox, cancer, parasite is only to perpetuate the cycle of revenge with multiplying offences to receive the new penalty in time to come.

“Turn within”: Entropy (second law of thermodynamics.)

In a bid to secure cheap solutions some investigators give new post-dated checks. The latest of such dishonored check is anti-malaria campaign. Report from “Times of India” Bombay edition, dated 4-12-79 says “In the ding dong battle with the man, the mosquito has once again revealed a new strategy which, unless countered quickly and effectively, can spell disaster. For the fight against malaria in recent years has been mainly based on a powerful drug called chloroquine, and this nostrum has lost its punch. A report by the U.N. environmental program says that this protozoan parasite has developed high resistance to the drug. This comes on top of the disclosure that 43 species of malaria spreading anopheline mosquitoes are resistant to a range of potent insecticide including DDT, BHC and carbamates.

After spending astronomical sums on various projects, authorities have realized that it is neither desirable, nor feasible to attempt malaria eradication by conventional means. All that can be aimed for the present to control its depredations and reduce its severity.”

Let us stop our vain fight against Nature and natural laws. End of this Universe is destined to be entropy, which compels equality. (See points 13.8 and 12.4.)

Entropy means equality.

A German chose the Greek word entropy to mean ‘turn within’. (Ref. Cybernetics A to Z, page 105). Turn within then. Address each of your cells, persuade him to a new realization, and make him participate in your heightened existence. In consequence, you shall have blessings of your colleagues; an experience un-comparable.

Here we end with a quotation from a great doctor. Which comes at the end of the book ‘Rich Ambitious and Healthy’ (Written by S.V.) Dr. Kenneth Walker is an impeachable authority in modern science. Yet, his observations would fly in the face of optimists clinging to the day dream, that wonder drugs one day will win Nature and relieve them of their ills.

Dr. Walker asseverates:-

We have measured the sun, and because we have discovered that it is only a star of the second magnitude, we no longer reverence its splendor. God has become an unnecessary hypothesis to the possessor of a little natural philosophy and has been eliminated from the Universe. Many of our fears are due to our illusions concerning ourselves and the lack of any time in our lives. We see ourselves as the sole representatives of mind traveling through space-time in a dead and soulless universe. Sometimes, we may boast that we are conquering ‘Nature’, but Nature does not even fight; she is secure in her possession of us. We may think that with a little more cleverness and contriving, we shall be able to live out the span of our lives, not only with security, but in comfort. This is an absurdity, for there can be no security and no certainty of comfort for anything that breaths and moves.

Summary:

At conception, ‘Organized Mind’ fabricates an ‘individual’, builds around it a net of cells. When the universe in which we live is travelling toward entropy, i.e. equality, we all also should practice equality within our body also with others in our world.

A German chose the Greek word entropy to mean ‘turn within’.

Turn within then. Address each of your cells, persuade him to a new realization, and make him participate in your heightened existence. In consequence, you shall have blessings of your colleagues; an experience un-comparable.

Understanding the nature and educating the mind for just behavior is the way out for the happiness, peace not only in individual life but also for the entire life on the earth.

A CLUE TO THE PURPOSE

ENTROPY the state of EQUANIMITY. (purpose – 5)

This blog concludes the discussion on the “PURPOSE OF THE UNIVERSE”. This book was authored by Swami Vijnananand (S. V.) and published in December 1961. We shall see the brief excerpts from this book and try to summarize the conclusions

REVIEW OF EARLIER BLOGS on ‘PURPOSE’:

In the first blog titled PURPOSE OF THE UNIVERSE Why and how of the universe” October 10’ 2013, we saw that while there are some theories on HOW of the Universe, WHY of the universe is not explained by science or any other discipline of knowledge. The conversation on the subject published by The Templeton foundation gives views of the experts, which we have reviewed it in details. The conclusion in brief is: “While the purpose of the universe may or may not be spelt out, every prudent individual should identify / know and live his life with meaningful purpose.

The second blog CAUSALITY OF ACCIDENTS (PURPOSE - 2) Nature of 'Accidents'” of October 17’ 2013 is based on one chapter from the book under reference. Dealing in details with the so-called accidents, S. V rationally concludes – Every accident is related to deserving cause though beyond cognition at an individual plane. There are no accidents in nature. We may not know the purpose (i.e. intent or cause), but the being of the Universe cannot be considered as an accident.

Blog 3 titled FREE WILL RESEARCH dated 22nd October’ 2013: This deals with the controversies and opposing views held by different camps of scientists, philosophers regarding the existence / non-existence off Free will. A project sponsored by Templeton Foundation is dealing with advance comprehensive research on the subject. Dr. Prof. Alfred Mele and some other experts in the field express a view that before any meaningful conclusions bridging the gaps can be drawn the acceptability of the ‘free will’ concept by all concerned based on the proper ‘definition’ is necessary.

Blog 4 CAUSALITY, FREE WILL CONVERSATION dated 24th October’2013: Here we find S.V. explaining in simple terms the concepts of FREE WILL and CAUSALITY. The discussion appropriately bridges the relationship between the concepts with rational arguments.

Chapter wise excerpts followed by summary:

Chapter 1, "WHY" OF THE UNIVERSE

Let it be straightway conceded that science scarcely aims at offering an absolutely trust worthy interpretation of the purpose of the universe. And at the same time, let it be added that not only science, but no branch of knowledge can legitimately enter in such vaunting (boastful) ambition. If all the thinkers sail in same boat, there is nothing wrong in remaining in the scientists’ camp, without having any inferiority complex. After all, science surpasses any other mode of investigation and it is unwise to argue that because science does not offer an all-embracing solution, a murky black-out is worth our vote. Science is no monopoly of a chosen few; its inferences and its laboratory are open to anyone, truly inspired. Einstein says, "I can think nothing, more objectionable than the idea of science for the scientists" Failures of science offer something which is always better than nothing. Science may not give us all the keys to the code of the universe, but there is no harm in accepting a clue to a part of it that is revealed to us, however microscopic it may be.

Let every man know his own Purpose, purpose of the universe will take care of itself. A scientist observes, "There is more obscurity (uncertainty, vagueness) in people who propound that there is no purpose in the universe, and 'purposefully' fight throughout their life to expound this thesis. Sure enough, it is an abuse of human sagacity to turn a deaf ear to tickling hints of Nature, suggesting her definite purpose. For being enlightened about this purpose, scientific rationale is worth implementing. And if science declares its incapacity at a given moment; taken in right spirit; should assure us of its 'bona fide character' and unshaken courage.

CHAPTER 2: FIRST CLUE OF SCIENCE AND CHAPTER 3: FALL OF CLASSICAL PHYSICS.

It is false to suppose that science takes the root from Copernicus, Kepler and Galileo or Bacon and Newton. Science is not an invention by itself. It is rather a tool employed by any motivated animal. From time memorable, men too have been observing, memorizing the observation, synthesizing its results, on repeated experiments finding out common features in Nature's phenomenon and have been turning such Nature's manifestations as the model code of conduct. The primitive who first put the softly bright flame into service was no other than a scientist, and his bubbling, lively extreme joy after his first successful attempt could not be anyway less than that of Watt, the Wright Brothers and Max Planck when miraculous' success crowned them. Not until the seventeenth century, however, scientific fact-finding could make headway of a sizable proportion, to displace the mystifying dogmas of the awe-adoring masses in general. Geniuses like Copernicus, Kepler and Galileo labored throughout their lives under the shadow of fate that pounced upon Socrates, for sticking up to his own matured convictions.

Since Maxwell's time itself, Newtonian mechanics was confronted with the initial challenges. Yet, concluding evidence was lacking in greater details, till the onset of the twentieth century. Max Planck first conceived and nursed new physics that leads to the great achievements by Einstein, Bohr and a number of others amongst whom Heisenberg takes away the laurels. Most certainly Heisenberg took new physics to new heights. He, in late thirties, ascertained the principle of uncertainty and as a consequence the deterministic attitude was obliged to give way. The new principle cautioned against the unwarranted optimism anent ability of a scientist to predict in the orthodox way. And yet more, in an attempt to fix up the position of a particle itself, control over knowledge of its velocity is lost and hence the researcher is left in a curious quandary. It was first discovered by Planck that the matter travels 'discontinuously'.

CHAPTER FOUR -- Limitations of Quantum

Copenhagen interpretation of quantum theory starts with a paradox. It starts from the fact that we describe our experiments in the terms of classical physics and at the same time from the knowledge that these concepts do not fit nature accurately. The tension between these two starting, points is the root of the statistical character of quantum theory. Therefore, it has sometimes been suggested that one should depart from the classical concepts altogether and that a radical change in the concepts used for describing the experiments might possibly lead back to a non-statistical, completely objective description of nature.

This suggestion, however, rests upon a misunderstanding. The concepts of classical physics are just a refinement of the concepts of daily life and are an essential part of the language which forms the basis of all natural science. Our actual situation in science is such that we do use the classical concepts for the description of the experiments, and it was the problem of quantum theory to find theoretical interpretation of the experiments on this basis. There is no use in discussing what could be done if we were other beings than we are. At this point we have to realize, as von Weizsacker has put it, that 'Nature is earlier than man, but man is earlier than natural science'. The first part of the sentence justifies classical physics, with its ideal of complete objectivity. The second part tells us why we cannot escape the paradox of quantum theory, namely, the necessity of using the classical concepts.

CHATTER FIVE - Copenhagen Mishandles Mind

Heisenberg favors the wave picture in the most un-equivocal terms, being more convenient. He says, “By means of its frequencies and intensities the radiation gives information about the oscillating charge distribution in the atom, and there the wave picture comes much nearer to the truth than the particle picture". Clearly then, to Heisenberg, non-matter presents a dominating, convenient and basic structure of the universe.

On this ground Marxist (materialists) scientists bitterly assail Copenhagen interpretation. Blochinzev slashes out, "Among the different idealists' trends in contemporary physics, the so-called Copenhagen School is the most reactionary".

One must be bold enough. I have neither to take sides nor any offence is meant to idealists or Heisenberg, for whom I have profound respect. Nevertheless the Copenhagen School invites a diatribe (bitter attack, violent criticism) for their attitude of sitting on the fence.

Various authors in their own words are thus far exhaustively reproduced so that there should be no accusation they are misrepresenting. But, after all, an open minded scientist has to make up his own mind about his own declaration of faith. For instance, if physics deals with matter which itself leaves no track and chooses to substitute a different basic structure, one does not know what remains of physics. And if nothing remains of it, one must be bold enough to acknowledge such a predicament perplexity, not tacitly (silently, with unspoken words) but expressed.

Scientists subscribe to mind as non-material entity. To begin with Heisenberg himself yields accord to psyche, being independent of matter. On page 28 of Heisenberg's 'Physics and Philosophy', in the introduction by Prof. Northrop he says, "In any event, two things seem clear and make what Heisenberg says on these matters exceedingly important. First, the principle of complementarity and the present validity of the Cartesian and common-sense concepts of body and mind stand and fall together. Second, it may be that both these notions are merely convenient stepladders which should now be, or must eventually be, thrown away. Even so, in the case of the theory of mind at least, the stepladder will have to remain until by its use we find the more linguistically exact and empirically satisfactory theory that will permit us to throw the Cartesian language away". Prof. Northrop in the next sentence itself says that “the only difficulty which disturbs Heisenberg is diverse notions on mind and lack of scientific language that can describe it”.
'What Mind Means' which is another treatise in this series (New Way series), aims at such synthesis. What really remains to be proved should be the responsibility of Heisenberg himself. It is his quest (investigation) that has led humanity to the new height of knowledge and its consequent corollaries (obvious deductions) can hardly be evaded.

Heisenberg says that the laws of physics do not hold good in a living man (the only difference being existence of mind in this case) and he holds it more true in psychology, "If we go beyond biology and include psychology in the discussion, then there can scarcely be any doubt but that the concepts of physics, chemistry, and evolution together will not be sufficient to describe the facts. On this point the existence of quantum theory has changed our attitude from what was believed in the nineteenth century. During that period some scientists were inclined to think that the psychological phenomena could ultimately be explained on the basis of physics and chemistry of the brain. From the quantum-theoretical point of view there is no reason for such an assumption. We would, in spite of the fact that the physical events in the brain belong to the psychic phenomena, not expect that these could be sufficient to explain them."

Physics deals with the matter and if the laws of matter do not apply to an entity, it hardly remains material, at the given moment. Heisenberg is a rational scientist and he had to come to the conclusion that the concept of non-material covers a very wide range. He himself admits concept of God, Soul, and Mind etc. in science, on page 172 of his treatise; yet, in the next paragraph itself, he adheres to scientific method howsoever limited utility it offers.

This apparent contradiction disappears if mind is taken to be identical with non- matter, whether in wave or in other manifestations. It is worth reiteration that I am not dogmatic in these assertions; but unless science throws further light on this problem, there is no other way but to accept that the mind is itself identical with any “motion”, or any "cause" as such, if the word identical is not pressed too far and kept open for further classification, in view of present state of knowledge.

CHAPTER SIX Causation and Mind

Cause and effect relationship subsists throughout Nature, howsoever conceptually.
Newtonian causality has never gained ground, unimpeachably; while quantum has never denied true essence of causal code. Causality, though scientists are not fully aware of its details in all its perspective, remains a valid law. In fact, quantum renders due respect to causality.
Measurability is put off the scent (gives wrong or confusing information), in the new situation. The limitation reflects on our own to trace back 'mind' behind the matter. Normally, an ideal measurability in minutest details sounds superfluous. Effect being a measure of its effective cause is utterly undeniable, howsoever perplexing a picture the whole process presents to the imperfect analyzer, examiner.

CHAPTER SEVEN Causation and Disease

Should the medical authority be inclined to calculate upon unalterable authenticity of cause and effect relationship, he cannot cavil (find fault unnecessarily) at 'effect' exclusively having an internal origin. The man himself is the cause of disease, whatever its nature and in spite of unknowability (ignorance) of its immediate discernible (distinguishable) cause. The premise has been discussed in four volumes of this (new way) series and particularly in 'Cure without Medicine' and 'The Rich, Ambitious and Healthy'; though it calls for further elucidation, in as much as the problem touches causation in human stride. It is true that to prove disease in each case having a within-bound root amounts to a formidable task save (except, but) for theory of causation. On endorsing the theory, unchallengeable on the level of gross matter, in any event, no extra evidence is needed.

CHAPTER 8: Nature of 'Accidents'

Are there accidents in Nature? If not then the ‘causality’ prevails. We may not know the cause at each occasion, for every effect. If being of universe is the ‘effect’ then there must be a cause behind it, this is a logical conclusion. Science or any other discipline of knowledge is not being able to detect it would not rule out its existence. This chapter discusses the nature of so-called accidents.

Necessarily then, every effect-disease, accident, dis- pleasure is related to a deserving cause, though beyond cognition, at an individual Plane. There are no accidents or co-incidences in nature although we may not be able to trace the cause in every occurrence of such nature.

Chapter 9: Clue to Purpose

If I leave the ambitious project of penetrating through the purpose of universe, and instead explore the unknown regions of myself and elevate the inner core, indiscerptible universe also to that extent stands elevated, enlightened. Such an ultra-stoical (extra calm) philosophy may be faithfully followed by a few, conveniently ignored by some and indignantly criticized by many, who would be directly hit by its tenets. But, convinced of my opinions, beliefs, there remains no real adversary from my point of view and as for my reprove, he too learns in the process of launching on me a carping but one-sided attack.

Threshold of Heisenberg era has opened new vista in the world of knowledge. The principle of indeterminacy has helped us diligently discover the source of living animal in non-material form and it has assisted us to recognize that the "living" is not any quality or development of matter.
If a dead body is kicked with dishonor; the effects will follow merely the laws of matter. The rate at which the skeleton is displaced can be determined. Before the body breathes its last, even the gesture of a kick reacts swiftly and stubbornly. Well, if the offended is a coward he may make a swift move and honorable retreat. In any event the reaction eludes predictability when something more than mere matter is under consideration. This element of indeterminacy is revealed by new quantum mechanics. It has helped us to cogitate beyond the notion of matter and give due respect, both to mind and matter.

Our talk of supremacy of mind is a mere balderdash to say the least. The capricious mind entertains ego, greed, affection, anger and these waves are cited as proofs to establish mind's superiority over matter. Thinkers of all faiths lay stress on evil attributes of such exciting palpitations and recommend voluntarily accepted quiescence (quietness, in-activity). Indeed, matter is an exemplary model for such an object, since matter has no passionate fidgets (uneasiness, impatience), which the languid (slack, slow) mind proudly claims. Matter is not attached to mind it is the other way round. The law of indeterminacy, therefore, has not only helped to lay the distinction between mind and matter, but also to focus our attention on the cause of indeterminacy, which takes its root from extra- mundane entity, mind.

This state of affairs, everyone slavishly dancing at the beck and call of mind, does not seem to be covetable. If each owner of personality defers his oscillations and dispassionately broods over for a moment, 'New Way philosophy' seeks to place before the layman, the great importance of both indeterminacy and causality and tersely indicates how these laws should be understood by the elated (very happy or joyful) individual. The might of neutrality and silence properly perceived this synthesis brought about should be conductive.

The principle of entropy, Barnet calls it the only principle of old physics, yet unchallenged, asserts that in time to come, there will be no energy-transformation and consequently living as seen presently, will draw to a close. Not waiting for the imposed extinction, and instead of continuing to suffer under the false label of pleasure, is it not worth-while aiming at a 'personal entropy’ and reach the state where no energy-transformations are motivated, at least in the internal realm? Pragmatic philosophers idealize detachment as a principle, par excellence, so echoes Einstein and so trust the celebrated scientists.

Lecomte du Nouy, in his work, 'Human Destiny' (Nobel Prize Winner Millikan puts it in the first three of the century), categorically affirms, "The source of all evil is in the very substance of man. To extirpate (remove totally) this evil we must neutralize not only the instincts inherited from our animal ancestors, but the superstitions transmitted by our human ancestors, the excrescences of an uncontrolled mental activity, of misguided ambitions, and replace them with the sense of human dignity".

My comments …

It would be a worth proposition for inquisitive readers to refer to the original book. My perception based on the study reveals the summary as follows:

Chapter 1 tells about the impossibility on the part of Science or any other branch of knowledge to answer WHY of the universe. Without bothering for the purpose of the Universe it may be better idea to find own purpose. Nature signals some hints to indicate its purpose.

Chapter 2 to 5 take a brief historical review of science up to the stage of the ‘principle of uncertainty’ and draw a conclusion that the theoretical existence of non- material form of the reality has to be accepted by science which is normally called as ‘mind’.

Chapter 6 and 7 give detail analysis and deductions supporting the concept of CAUSALITY prevailing in nature. We may not know the purpose (i.e. cause), but the being of the Universe cannot be ruled as an accident. There are no accidents or co-incidences in nature although we may not be able to trace the cause in every occurrence of such nature; concludes chapter 8.

Chapter 9 points toward ENTROPY as the clue of Purpose. As per the present knowledge the universe is destined to reach the stage of entropy as it will end its journey. Entropy is to be considered as stage of equanimity instead of ‘highest disorder’. A human being; also a part of the universe can endeavor to reach a stage of entropy within by trying to achieve a steady, balanced state of mind. All great thinkers of humanity recommend such an action.

The purpose of the existence of the universe is not known to the science but the end is known as a stage of no motion i.e. entropy. That is a stage of equality as elaborately explained by S.V. on rational concepts. If a human being tries to develop the attitude of equality within his mind then his efforts will be in alignment with the journey of universe. Possibly at such a stage of mind he may be able to know the real purpose of the universe.
