Three Objections Scientists May Raise

(Excerpts from book “Cure without Medicine”)

The possible objections from those who believe in classical school of science could be as follows:

A)  Is it sound to postulate (claim) that the mind or emotions obey the law of mechanics?

B)  Do Laws of Mechanics apply to living bodies?

C)  Can the disease be termed ‘Potential Energy’ stored by the body in the strict scientific sense?

Q A – Is it sound to postulate that mind or emotions obey the laws of mechanics?


A.1 For those scientists who consider mind or emotions to be the forms of matter, no explanation is required because all of them believe that ‘matter’ will follow the laws of mechanics.

The possible objection by some scientist could be as follows:
Mind and emotions, though matter, do not obey the laws of mechanics as they are sub-atomic entities (At sub-atomic level, i.e. at quantum mechanics, the laws of mechanics are not seen to be followed clearly or evidently).

It is a fact that some scientists hold ‘causality’ to have no sway in the sub-atomic realm (i.e. sub-atomic particles also follow causality). More information on this is available in the ‘Purpose of the Universe’, written by S.V.

Scientist like Max Planck and Einstein consider that as the science would advance in knowledge the ignorance about the behavior properties of matter at sub-atomic level would be vanished. They decidedly hold that causal laws are true everywhere and in due course, with progress in all directions, these will be proved to hold good at sub-atomic level as well.

Under these circumstances, particularly after the equivalence of mass and energy has been established, no scientist could be dogmatic and say that laws of motion should not apply to the mind or to emotions. Later it will be seen how the controversy on ‘causality’ is resolved. For the moment let us concentrate on how ‘ease and disease can be measured scientifically’.

A.2 Science cannot afford to keep itself away from the discussion of ‘the effect brought about by the mind’. Because as a science it has to do its duty to deal with this question of highest importance to entire mankind. If it wants, science can neglect ‘mind’ but the ‘effect of mind’ cannot be at all ignored by science. Because though the ‘mind’ is outside the realm of fundamental science, its effect decidedly lie within it (science). As discussed later, it falls entirely within the scope of science to deal with the ‘effect’ created by mind.

A.3 Emotions (say anger) arouse a person and then he performs some action on other person. If the action on the other person is to be measured then the causes to be considered should obviously include the emotions (in mind) which incited the action (This is illustrated by proper example on page 80-81 of the book).

A.4 Now we came to the focal point of the subject of this book.

When an individual is ‘angry’ he need not necessarily move and initiate some visible action. Even he is sitting quite on a place, unmoved, the pulse pushes itself forward. So does the heart. Millions of molecular in the body are set in motion. The inertia of the body is disturbed. It is nothing but a mechanical motion in energy sense.

A.5  Science difficulty could be as follows:

Even it is accepted that the emotions (in mind) produces action in the mechanical sense, how can we measure emotions (?) (What could be the unit for emotion say, ‘anger’?)

This difficulty though genuine, has to be sorted out and that is business of science. If we accept ‘emotion’ to be force, the question is how to measure force!

Measurement of force. Challenge to science

Science would be denying itself the title of ‘science’, were it to declare and say that emotions as cause do not fall within the purview of science. If this is outside the purview of scientist as they consider it today (this book was written by S.V. before 1960), then the clear unambiguous duty of science to get it within its purview. They as scientists cannot escape the responsibility, once they have laid down definitions and when a situation arises that fulfills the required condition.

Still there may be another difficulty which science may raise. For any mechanical action, a minimum of two bodies are required. But mind and body belong to one individual only.

Let it be categorically stated that not all scientist consider mind and body to be one, although they certainly belong to one individual. We have seen the quotation from Sherrington in Chapter nine. It says that even a single cell in unique entity, different from other entities. There are millions of cells in the body. If they obey the law of individuality (which this question presupposes), there will be no disease but by and large, they strive to obey their own individuality. (More discussion on this in the book ‘Mind Power’ written by S.V.).

This leads to the conclusion that in a single individual there are millions of entities. So let us restrict ourselves to accept at least the mind body as a duality.

A.6 We see no reason at all why the ‘mind’ should not be considered as a separate body. This contention (statement) is supported by ample convincing and exhaustive scientific evidence available in other books by S.V. namely ‘What Mind Means’, and Appendix to ‘Science and Philosophy’. Legitimately, we cannot speak of a cause-effect relationship without first accepting the mind-body duality in this reference.

Question B – Do laws of mechanics apply to living bodies?


B.1 Answer: Careful scrutiny of our detailed answer to question ‘A’ answer this question to some extent.

B.2 There will have to be three different answers for three different groups of scientists.

Group I – Scientists who do not reject or disapprove causality (or those scientists who accept causality). None of these group can show that what we have established in the immediately preceding paragraphs is not in strict conformity with causality.

Group II – Scientists who accept mind to be matter and causality as the absolute and supremely reigning (ruling or controlling) scientific law, then they can never reject applicability of the laws of motion to the mind.

Group III – This belongs to materialists, Non-Marxist scientists, who do not accept causality. They may argue that mind being at sub-atomic level like electrons, it is not governed by laws of mechanics. If they would argue mind to be the produce of brain at the atomic level, then they do admit laws of motion, while considering the causal relationship between mind and body (i.e. brain). On the other hand, if they consider the mind to be the produce of the brain at sub-atomic level, and consequently subject to the principle on indeterminacy, they are utterly astray (wrong).

Because here the answer is fully determinate, (definite, certain) when we know that the emotions as the cause of pulse variation (PV). The proofs establish the causal sequence beyond a shadow of doubt. Hence the conclusion where mind is concerned, action cannot be termed indeterminate. (Readers who are interested in full information on this point may refer another books by S.V. viz. ‘What Mind Means’ along with ‘Purpose of the Universe’ and ‘Science and Philosophy’).


To conclude we may say –

-         While the individual opinions of scientists may differ from group to group.
-         Or for that matter from individual to individual.
-         The configuration of mind and emotions each scientist may have his own personal opinion.

In spite of all these facts, science as such, must consider motion (or effect) produced by mind with its domain (Kingdom, area of activity). Looking at (or measuring) the visible mechanical effect actually produced, science can (work backward to) measure mind and assign the cause of these (effects) to be mind.

B.3 Summary

Emotion does come under the realm of physics, at least when, it makes mark on material body. Any doubt regarding this has no place in science.

Fundamental Definitions

- We have established that Pulse Variation (PV) is motion as per laws of mechanics

-         This PV is produced by emotion.

-         When this motion caused by emotion reaches a stage, a turning point is reached, a new state is arrived at.

-         We term that state as disease

-         Disease is essentially a complexity accumulated state of emotion or an exaggerated state of emotions reflected on the body.

-         We do not understand the direct link or links between emotion and so-called disease because the process is very complicated. Particularly because the body has a capacity to store the reaction potential for some time.

-         Since the duel between action and reaction is between emotions and body, therefore, the potential energy at the time of action can be directed at emotions only. (The example of steel wire turning into spring and later rewinding after reaching the limit is given earlier).

-         One can imagine how the complicated the process would be.

-         When an individual reflects that no less than at least six emotions (Shadvikar), blended in an infinity of ways have to be accounted for.

In any case, the readers who have carefully studied will have no difficulty in following our interpretation of the inter-relation of body-mind and the causal connection between emotions and disease.

We accept and firmly hold by the dual conception of the mind and body.

Question C: Can the disease be termed ‘Potential Energy’ stored by the body in the strict scientific sense?


In the discourse about disease it should be held that the two bodies where in this interplay of action and reaction goes on are the body on the one hand and the emotional personality (or the force created by emotion-mind) on the other. Action and reaction takes place between these two bodies.

-         The causal body (emotion personality) gives the other body (physical body) a motion. This energy in part of whole can be kept potent.

-         This potential energy at its appropriate chosen time can become the cause of another action (reaction). And this reaction we term as disease.

For our purpose, it is sufficient to establish three conditions –

i) Emotions and the mind should be presumed to obey the laws of mechanics
ii) Laws of Mechanics do apply to living bodies
iii) Disease can be called potential energy in the light of our detailed analytical discussion.

Further research necessary.

Research on the exact measurement of motion in pulse and other parts of the body in the case of each disease can and should be undertaken by science.

Open mind for new thoughts

It should be abundantly clear that only those scientists could be rightly termed non-dogmatic who care to look at and have inclination to appreciate new hypothesis. If there is any obstruction in this due to the closed circle approach, then such scientists should realize that their own concept of science needs very drastic revision. They should consider and understand the new hypothesis, if they find that logically the new hypothesis could constitute a justifiable explanation.

Can we compare disease and potential energy?  Yes, we can! According to several authorities in science.

Medicine and Mechanics

(Excerpts from book Cure without Medicine)

1.  The body is made of cells. The mind and in turn emotions are present in every cell of the body. The perfect co-ordination and unity of self is shared and maintained by each cell. Each cell shares these living emotional property. Hence our proposition laid down earlier stands proved collectively (at body of the organism) and individually (at each cell in the body of the organism).

2.  If pulse beats were the only standard, then a hard working laborer would be the victims of the worse disease (since while doing the labor, the pulse beats variation is much more than doing the table work involving intelligence).

3. Pulse is not the only measure


But it may be noted that pulse is not the only measure. When the intellectuals pulse is accelerated, the brain potentials (electric changes) are more rapid in his case. The laborer, comparatively, has a small change in the brain potential. In the case of intellectual, the rate of change of brain potential is comparatively higher. Indeed, here the consideration of minute volume of heart crops up along with the pulse rate but we shall ignore it here to make understanding simple. Pulse beat if compared to prick of a match stick, then brain potential would be equivalent to pin-prick. The sharper the worse.

These are simplified statements. Indeed brain potential bear different contexts.

4. Role of Medicine


We now consider the mode of action of medicine on the condition of disease itself.

Emotions are spread throughout body.

On the showing of science itself, the human body is an integrated whole. One cannot assert that emotion is in one part of the body and a boil on the foot is at another altogether distinct part of the body, unconnected with the lame of emotion. Every part of the body and emotion is jointly responsible for all actions of commission and omission. All action in the body collectively face the reaction under the laws of science.

5. Illustration (Simplified) to see the effect of medicine on the body.

5.1 Consider the case of a person who has become angry on six different occasions, say for 10 minutes on each occasion.

Assume his normal pulse rate is 72/minute.
When angry, it goes to 78/minute
PV (action)/minute is 6 stroke/minute
Total action produced in 60 minutes = 60 x 6 = 360 PV strokes
Therefore, the stored potential energy in the body = 360 strokes of action

5.2 Now assume that this potential energy (360 strokes) produces 60 minutes of headache. During the period of headache, the pulse will beat say at 78/minute. (This means, on the basis of discussion earlier, through the pain-emotions of headache, the body will react on the mind at the rate of six strokes per minute, i.e. reaction of 60 minutes x 6 strokes/minute = 360 strokes of reaction) Here we see the emotion (anger) has been fully compensated by headache.

5.3 But in practice, the person would take a pill to stop his headache. Say after 40 minutes (i.e. he suffered from the headache for some time and later his pain stopped due to the medicine he consumed), i.e. 20 minutes x 6 strokes/minute = 120 strokes of headache are saved by medicine.

5.4 But since these 120 strokes cannot be abolished, they are not destroyed or totally avoided, but merely withheld. The man gets relief from headache. Let us assume that the joy of relief the person enjoys for 10 minutes at the strokes of action of 6 strokes/minute. Hence 6 x 10 = 60 strokes the person has added to the potential quota of reaction (to be suffered sometime later).

5.5 Medicine itself creates some action on the body. It is not always possible to ascertain correctly in each case how much action a particular drug is likely to add to the body. Hypothetically in this case it is assumed that ¼ pill would have been sufficient to stop the headache. But since, one full pill was consumed ¾ pill was consumed in excess of the requirement. This excess medicine will also have strength to create action in the body.
We may say 120 strokes saved by taking medicine
                   60 strokes created by Joy of relief
                   360 strokes created by unwanted dose of medicine (action)
                   540 Total strokes

Thus, the picture:
540 strokes potential stored for future pain in spite of suffering headache for 40 minutes (40x6 = 240 strokes).

(In practice, the reaction thus stored because of joy or because of additional medicine may not be exactly as above. But then all that we are concerned with is that it is more than the original quota of reaction, the man should have been subjected to because of the headache).

5.6 Consider this again.

In the event the headache occurs again the next day, to give the individual the above 540 strokes. He does not wait even 40 minutes before taking medicine. He takes the medicine (pill) just within 5 minutes the headache starts. On each such occasion are added minimum of about 400 strokes. During three years, say 1000 days @ the above rate the body of the person has stored 1000x400 = 400,000 reaction strokes.
By taking medicine, the person has prohibited the body to react to the headache (suffering). So this large amount of reaction is directed to, say heart, in place of head. So the person gets a heart attack.

6. Alexis Carrel

Wrote in his famous book Man the Unknown about the potential capacity of the body to retain, yet adjust itself. Medicine is far from having decreased human sufferings as much as it endeavors to make us believe. Indeed the number of deaths from infection diseases has greatly diminished. But we still must die, and we die in a much larger proportion from degenerative diseases. The years of life which we have gained by the suppression of diseases (like diphtheria, small pox, typhoid fever, etc.) are paid for by the long sufferings and the lingering deaths caused by chronic affections and especially by cancer, diabetes and heart diseases.

7 The route may be complicated, the analysis complex yet the fundamental remains unaffected totally. They are identical in case of every disease. By any logic, there cannot be any other conclusion.

It is quite well-known that while the Pill stops the headache, it simultaneously also acts on the nervous system. Where other medicines are concerned, they act either on the nervous system or on some other part of the body. There is no provision for the medicine to unconditionally be thrown out of body. On the contrary, the medicine becoming one with the body, metabolism again produces its effect. So all that person achieves by taking medicine is to delay the action of disease or to change its original nature ultimately to be all the worse for treatment.

8. Let me make it clear. In case you ask me whether we should not then take medicines at all?

Leaving details for later discussion, I emphasis that we should at least add to the medicine, appreciation of these findings and Peace of Mind resulting therefrom (from this knowledge).



Summary

When emotion (cause) turns itself into disease (effect), the process is subtle (Fine and difficult to understand). Cause-Effect, Action-Reaction take place either immediately or (through medicine if can be) differed. In the first alternative, the manifestation of effect is immediately, or optionally (by postponement by medicine), it can be stored as potential energy. This is again purely as per another concept of physics).

Mechanicss of Emotion

(Excerpts from book “Cure without Medicine”)

The Law of Causation in the Quantum Age


(Note – Another book ‘Purpose of the Universe’ Author – Swami Vijnananand) discusses validity of causal laws in sub-atomic state. Here we are dealing with the validity with grosser level)

Our conclusion so far is that disease originates from emotions. Is this conclusion in line with the general findings of science?

Scientific laws formulate a relation between cause and effect. The work of the scientist would be completed when and only when any causal chain is completed. The Law of Causality is so universally applicable as to stand a foundation of scientific knowledge of truth.

Since we are concerned with a problem related to living organisms, the laws of biology, physics and chemistry form the frame of reference. Additionally, we have also to take into consideration the general principles of science. Science accepts the notion of causation with which we begin our discussion. In this Universe, the Laws of Cause and effect rules. Every cause must necessarily have an effect.

The causality of disease has to be explained till origin.

If every effect whatsoever has a cause that precedes it, then it stands to reason that the disease must have one. That cause or causes have been very insufficiently explained by experts so far. Dr. Fidler (M.D.) clearly admits that – Experts today accept causation in theory. In practice, they behave attempting to act the opposite of what is accepted like fundamental laws such as the ‘Law of Causation’.

We feel that the effect of disease must have Its cause in mans desire for ease. This certainly sounds logical and the relevancy of the proposition will become more evident when we discuss this proposition in relation to physics.

Emotions and Physics


Three fundamental issues explained are –

a) Life also presupposes inertia.
b) Any disturbance in inertia amounts to action.
c) Each event that leads to the sparking of an excitability produces action throughout the body.

Here we have to show what modern physics and its laws indicate (reveal) in our field of research in this book.

The most distinguishing quality of life (from non-life) is motion which is visible and can be readily seen. Though motion is the intrinsic property of all matter, living matter is apparently distinguishable by its motion at the very start (i.e. birth).

Mechanics

The branch of science that deals with motion is Mechanics.  As regards Mechanics and Living matters, Mechanics should deal with all motion without bringing in any distinguishing features of its being living or non-living.


Inertia


Mechanics accepts basic motion in all matter and terms it ‘Inertia’. The word ‘inertia’ is derived from the Latin and it literally means ‘Laziness’.

Inertia Definition – The resistance of matter to any change in both its state of rest or of uniform motion in straight line is defined as inertia. Inertia is known to be one of the fundamental characteristic of the matter (That property of matter by which it intends to remain so, and when in motion, continue to be in motion in the same straight line or direction, unless acted upon by some external force).

No distinguishing between Living and Non-Living

As far as application of laws of mechanics is concerned, essentially science cannot distinguish between living and non-living. This has been asserted by eminent western scientists, Russian scientists.

Inertia of Living matter

Therefore, we necessarily have to assume that according to the concept of mechanics, inertia of living matter is the normal given basic movement of life. In case of man, even one seriously attempts to discover any motion in him then that is both basic and also subject (the self-ego related) in some measure, so far as the specific individual is concerned. That would certainly constitute basic inertia in him.

Illustration – For instance, his normal pulse in 72 beats per minute or the potential from the brain at normal rest indicate the rate of 720 electrical alpha potential per minute, this must be assumed as inertia for the particular individual. Corresponding movements in the whole metabolism should also be described as inertia, and in any case, if, for any reason whatsoever, these movements accelerate or retard, this must be called an action in mechanical terms i.e. in terms of physics.

Thus, it is crystal clear that life has within it a normal motion – which for physics is Inertia. Any acceleration or retardation therein amounts to the application of some force in the positive or negative direction. This change in motion then comes under the purview (range) of motion as studied by the science of mechanics, i.e. physics.

Emotions, Excitability and Motion


What brings about this change in inertia? What force is acting that brings about this change in motion?
Obvious answer is that – It is the property of excitability possessed by living matter. And the cause of excitability cannot be other than emotions. When ‘cause’ comes under discussions, we enter the realm of pure physics, a Newtonian thought. Cause-Effect terminology is same as Action-Reaction terminology.

Mechanics of Emotions


Human metabolism action leads us to emotion and their relation to disease. While we consider ‘action’ in human metabolism, we enter the realm of pure mechanics. Newton laid the foundation of classical mechanics in his famous Laws of Motion. The Laws of Motion are applicable to all matters (above the atomic level). The third law states ‘to every action there is an equal and opposite reaction’. This law, we claim, is applicable to emotions and disease.

While we go into the depth of origin of human action, it is seen that – No action can ever take place unless the assumption of the existence of inherent sensation and emotion in the living body is claimed. Emotions emerge from mind and they are part of mind.

Emotions are the intrinsic property of life inherent in us. When a given emotion acts, it acts on nothing but the body of the human being concerned. When an emotion puts the body into action, pushes the body without exception. In its turn the body must push back the emotion with an equal and opposite force.

Here we should note a fine point which is very relevant. The human body has the capacity to ‘store’ impact of action and reaction. By the virtue of the peculiar matter which is used to build our body, it can store the potential energy.

Example – Take a walk thrice your usual capacity to walk. The pain in the legs (reaction) will be observed next day in the form of muscular discomfort but not immediately on the same day (body stores the reaction overnight).

The reaction necessarily has to be equal and opposite. So the body acts against the emotion concerned, which initiated the first action. This reaction we call as disease (Normally the action is for some sort of desired pleasure so the reaction would be normally displeasure accompanied by some pain).

Thus emotions give different kind of pains to the body. The body concerned accumulates reaction and gives pain to the mind through emotions. Thus, in this manner, pain acts as emotion-carrier both ways.

In a simple words Mind through emotions acts on the body for the ease and pleasure that one seeks. Body as a reaction gives disease and displeasure to mind, again reacting on emotions.

Mathematically to express

 E   =    Emotion   =    Pulse variation (PV)              D   =    Disease            =       Pulse variation (PV)

Therefore,

E   =   D
   
   (Either E is unexpressed disease or D is expressed emotion)

Similarly, when we say the body hits back at the mind, it is merely a mechanical reaction. When mind (for ease, pleasure) produces PV, it acts on the body.

In effect, there are four stages – (If a straight steel wire is hit by a hammer, it may wind in a spring. After the spring winds at full capacity, further hit may unwind it by force).

-         Action-Reaction – Mind turning the body into a spring.
-         Body reaches a stage (limit) equal to that of spring (fully wound)
-         The stroke of the pulse immediately following (even   smallest) due to the spring reaction the PV is initiated from the body-end. (This state is precisely the state of disease.
-         The disease is overcome when the spring is unwound.

Finally, the most important fact, readers have to bear in mind is that the process explained here and elsewhere is never so straight and simple but enormously complex in reality. Because, when we compare the body turning itself into a spring, and this spring hitting back at the mind in the state of a disease, the existence of disease itself gives rise to more emotions.

So the process of unwinding of the spring is not perfect on most occasions. Other times, smaller springs are unwound only to create a bigger spring, i.e. minor disease are suppressed to create a serious disease.

How does all this add up?

Howsoever small the tennis ball and howsoever strong the roof may be, if the hitting of the ball against the roof is ceaselessly done, decade and decade, the roof is bound to crumple up one day or the other, to end the relationship between man, ball and roof.


Summary In terms of Laws of Physics


          Cause (Emotion) is undeniably linked up with Disease (Effect).

          This has been proved in terms of Mathematics and Physics (Algebra).
