Evolution of mind. (W.M.M. - 7)

Excerpts from book: WHAT MIND MEANS (Author Swami Vijnananand, Manashakti publication).

Chapter 6 – Mind in ‘Evolution’ Theory

Unquestionably, the stage human mind has now reached before being owned by the pragmatic mammal should be taken to have evolved right from protozoa, if we hesitate to go beyond (protozoa).

Sir Charles Sherrington (Noble Prize Winner)Mind is energy, Birth is energy transformation.
He asserts with admirable courage explains – Mind seems to emerge from no mind (during birth of a child from a small embryo). So conversely at death, it seems to re-emerge into no-mind. Mind seems to come from nothing and to return to nothing. But the devolution (degeneration) into nothing seems as difficult to accept as the evolution out of nothing. If mind is considered as same form of energy, the story (birth and death) would be one of energy-transformation.

2 Mind in evolutionary process

To understand the above, the study of few stages out of innumerable stages self-evidently meets our purpose.
Primordial form (elementary form)
One cell animal or amoeba
Plants
Vertebrates (fish)
Embryo frog
Bees
Cat – (Willy) #
Horse – (Hans) #
Apes/Monkey – (Trader) #
White rats
Chimpanzees
Training/Taming of various animals.

2.1 Mind in the elementary/original (primordial) form may have embraced matter – Earlier Aristotle and later Oliver Lodge, who ranks high amongst modern inventors, have formulated premise (proposition helping a conclusion).

2.2 First step of evolution/Single cell organism can learn

We consider the views of Sir Sherrington to see this step. ‘Amoeba has mind’ this statement is put forward by Sherrington ‘were an amoeba as big as dog, we should all acknowledge its mind.’ “The connection of the brain with mind seems to rest on the organization of the brain, and that organization is cell-organization. An observer’s only means of inferring mind is the behavior he can observe. Many forms of moving single cells lead their own independent lives. Some of them are free single-celled animals. They all are tiny but their motor behavior can be watched with microscope. They swim, crawl, they secure food, they unit together, they multiply. The amoeba, paramecium, vorticella and so on…. The observer at once says ‘they are alive’.

(i) The small particle of food swallowed, (ii) the movement towards a particle of liking, (iii) the withdrawal from a touch, (iv) the preferential seize of this particle, rather than that (v) the chemistry of the cell reacting to the chemistry of the little field around.

Considering the above activities in a single cell animal, observers of skill, who after devoting patient study of the motor behavior of such single cells conclude that microscopic single-cell life, without sense organ and without nervous system can learn”.

2.3 Plants – There are such bio-currents discovered from plants as well. Plant physiology attempts to discover the hidden mechanism guiding plant life. The questions reached are:

Do plants have sensory organs? Nervous system?
Are they capable of ‘conscious’ act?
Do they have reflexes?
Are they able to react to the outer influence of the environment?
Is it possible to diagnose what plants ‘like’ and ‘dislike’?
Whether the plant is healthy or ailing?
Can we learn the plants health before it begins to wither and perish?

The study on the above has already produced initially amazing results. It is seen that the plants sleep, feel vigorous, feed themselves and rest.
So the plants have also some sort of consciousness (or mind).

2.4 Fish/Vertebrates There seems no clear lower limit to mind.
The human mind can be easily observed and noticed. But; as we go on tracing downwards (in the animals hierarchy) along the scale of being, the defense (or well-founded confidence) of inference regarding mind fade. Ultimately mind so traced seems to fade to no-mind.
Thus in the series of organisms of our own stock (inventory), is mind recognizable in the cartilaginous (having skeleton of cartilage) fish? The reply comes ‘fish can learn’.
Embryo frog.

2.5 Proceeding to embryo frog, we reach to more encouraging information. “In the embryo frog, the cells destined to be brain, can be replaced by cells from the skin of the back, the back even of another embryo. These cells after transplantation become in their new host brain-cells and seem to serve brain purpose duly”.

2.6 Bees
Intelligence of bees is a common knowledge and so it may be left untouched. A book ‘Animal IQ’ is worth mention for further reading.

2.7 Cat –Willy – Time sense and fascination of an event #
The story is given on page 69 of the book (What Mind means) in details. This is about a cat namely Willy. Willy on Monday night at 7.45 would leave her usual place and start walking road. It would cross the signal light when green then after walking considerable distance from origin it will reach a typical spot underneath a window of nurses’ dining room. There it would spend two hours watching with fascination the activities going on inside, where a group of ladies playing bingo (lottery like game). When the game was over, Willy always went directly home. The cat, Willy seems to have a time sense and also liking for the ladies group playing bingo. He always appeared at the door for breakfast at about 8.10 each morning. He apparently knew that his master would leave for the day a few minutes later.

2.8 Horse – Hans # –
The book (What Mind Means) gives a detailed story of an ‘intelligent’ horse which can add, subtract, talk and could solve mathematical problem (pages 70-72). This was a story in Germany at the turn of twentieth century (End of 19th century?) After detailed study, though the intelligence of horse was reduced to receiving clues from his master.
Two points deserve a special mention that – (a) none has denied the ability of the horse to express and talk, (b) the horse undeniably possessed intelligence to accept the clues.

2.9 Apes – Scientists have long assumed that the use of symbols is an exclusive human talent. Their belief has been shaken by some fascinating experiments. Certain animals, it now appears, can not only understand the symbolism of money, they can become positively mad about money. In experiments at Columbia University it was discovered that even while rats can be taught to trade marbles for food. With the rats, however, the trading appears to be mere a matter of conditional learning than of getting them to regard marbles as money symbols worth treasury.

# Trader: The experiments conducted on a monkey called trader, who lived in San Diego zoo is given on page 73. ….. When the psychologist would extend his hand (to trader) and say, ‘Trader, give me something’. Trader would move around briskly until he found a paper piece or door stop and bring it to the psychologist. If that did not win him any food in return, he would hunt up something else. If, however, after giving the psychologists four of different items a swap (barter exchange) was still not forthcoming, Trader would throw a fit all over the places and holler (yell, start), that he was being exploited.

3.  In recent years hundreds of psychologists have become curious to know the real facts about animal mentality and personality. They have devised all sorts of intelligent tests and strategies to get inside the world of different animals.

Can some animals really think and feel emotions? If so, which are the brainiest? Some of the findings of the psychologists have been astonishing.  It is true that some of the animals are stupid and lacking in good judgment. But on the other hand, several psychologists have found themselves (scientists) out witted (surpassed in wisdom) by chimpanzees on their own tests!  One psychologist, who marked a group of college students against a group of whole rats on a maze test, was astonished to find that the students came out poor second.

4. Certainly, organisms have always kept up pace with the developed mind, the size of the brain and so with intelligence. Apparent retrogression (backward movement) in the transitional (intermediate) stage, reflects the requirement of personality at a given moment. But the total effect was always amelioration (improvement).
Animals’ intelligence is comprehensible

5. Animal trainers experience on handling different animals indicate
Animal possess a good visual and auditory memory. The majority of the wild beasts can be made as tame as our domestic animal if they are captured at their early age. The gentle treatment yield favorable results. Animals have reflexes and behavior depending upon their usual staying place. Every animal has a personality of his own. Memory in animal is developed in various degrees.

There are wide ranges of temperaments
Trainer must ascertain character, memory and temperament of the animals
They have moods too!
The oral movements are received well if properly trained
(The details can be seen from 75 to 78 of the book).
From the above observations animals’ intelligence becomes comprehensible in its proper perspective.

6. Physiological evolution only along with psychical evolution.

At each landmark of development, manifestation (materialization) of mind varies in degree, but at no stage can it be forced back to total obviation (state of total lack of awareness to the universe at large).
Since Darwin’s thesis is stated exclusively in terms of physiological evolution forcibly divided or dis joined from psychical evolution by his own discretion, sound in-compatible or unsuitable. The evidence provides latter (psychical evolution) as the cause of the former (physiological evolution). The theory of continuity of mind throughout the evolution renders the matter more easy and understandable.

Individuality Presupposes Mind

1.  Mind is the architect of what is styled as individuality.
- There are very numerous individuals.
- There is deceptive likeness amongst them but each is unique by itself.
The above peculiarities reinforce faith in our well founded or effective expostulation (objection).

2.  There is no un-sophistical, boring, ugly repeating in Nature. There are no two organisms in the world that have any single character absolutely alike. How and why? The individualities manifest fine or wide distinction? Merely left to matter the phenomenon becomes erratically unexplainable. Mind taken into consideration facilitates (helps) to resolve the riddle of innumerable diversities.

3. Why, living under the same environment and consuming the same diet members in one family have different complexions and colors of skin consistently maintained? Hypothesis of mind alone provides a rational clue. Each man embodies (provides within body) a chemical factory of his own which takes upon it turning all the incoming stuff in a way suitable to his urgent requirements.

4. Science, on its part asserts that no two organisms in the past, present or future are likely to carry the same complement of genes. This phenomena import greater significant in the light of our hypothesis. Existence of mind alone explains prevalence of innumerable and unrepeatable qualities of every form (uniformities).

5. In other books on health written by S.V. and the book ‘Save Your Child from Yourself’ we see that the myth of heredity faces a categorical and serious challenge. What is the mechanism by which the acquired properties are transported to the next species if heredity gives unauthentic answers?

6. The present theory of evolution (Darwin Theory) pathetically fails to un-riddle the gap between the two species. How ‘ape’ shifted on to attain ‘human’ structure? We still have ‘apes’ surviving on the earth. Has anybody noticed them to develop from ape-hood to man-hood? Has any ape detected mere like human races by gradually or progressively bearing resemblance of human features? Or does anyone see certain other apes on the verge of losing tails and yet other having no tails at all and with smooth, shinning body skin? Why is there a straight sudden jump from ape-hood to man-hood as there are talent leaps in between rest of the species? While matter (say nitrogen atom), passing through most complex cyclic orders displays no ’improvement’. If it was matter alone which was evolving (improving) the nitrogen atom also should display sustained, gradual, mechanical advancement, which it does not. Mind alone can be considered to be accountable for the acquired characters during these various intervals. The secrets of these gaps in the evolution can never be unmasked unless – Mind is recognized as a vital force independent of matter.

7. These gaps – are unsolved riddles.

Engels calls ‘leaps’
Darwin calls ‘successive intervals’
Pavlov calls ‘short distinctions or addition’

All are unexplained. Regarding these jumps, Darwin says (on page 83 of book) ……… New species have come on the stage slowly and at successive intervals, and the amount of change, after equal intervals of time, is widely different in different groups. There is no reason except ‘mind’ which holds the acquired properties during the interval.

8. Elective capacity

Lysenko asserts that every organism incorporates an ‘elective’ capacity. Eddington adds (page 86) – It seems that we must attribute to the mind power not only to decide the behavior of atoms (in the brain) individually but to affect systematically large groups – (atom groups in brain) – in fact tamper with the odds on atomic behavior. This has always been the most doubtful (dubious) point in the theory of interaction of mind and matter. This view supports that ‘elective capacity’ admitted by Lysenko essentially speaks of non-natural origin i.e. mind.
Individuality

1)  Inevitable inference is then the ‘Mind’ need to come before the concept of individuals. To examine the concept of ‘Individuality’ the discussion on page 90-92 reveals as follows:
To cure the ‘asthma of a patient’, a crude so-called remedy followed in few countries is to swallow a living fish. The constitution of fish itself carries millions of bacteria during the time the fish remain animated (live) in the human body, what should the ‘individuality’ of the man convey? Is it any way absolute (perfect)? In such a case

(i) Millions of parasites that take shelter in and on his own person,
(ii) The fish, and
(iii) The microbes accompanying the fish

Compare his ‘individuality’. Every second, a fresh batch of micro-organism get introduced in the human personality replacing old ones. A personality in practice eventually includes millions and billions of individuality. This is because no creature can lose his identity being one-billionth of millimeter in length. Obviously, therefore, boasting of our ‘individuality’ amounts only to a conceptual hypothesis depending upon the balance (and requirement) of millions and billions of our tiny unseen guests.

Psych and not material brain (in the head cover) is personality or individuality.

Nevertheless, once the hypothesis of ‘individuality’ is taken to be true in the universe of discourse (discussion), it essentially refers to the ‘psyche’ and not to the material pericranium (the fibrous membrane covering the external surface of the skull)

The Siamese twins

(Pages 91-92) give in details of a ‘Hilton Siamese twins’. These cases of Siamese twins reassure the researcher that not matter but the role of the mind determines individual's relationship with the life, as well as with death.

My Remarks: The evolution theory will be able to explain many un-answered questions if the ‘evolution of the mind’ is properly understood and appreciated as written by S. V. in this book as well as other books related to the “New Way Philosophy”.

(Note: This is an attempt to make reader-friendly interpretation of the book “WHAT MIND MEANS” based on my perception. Readers are requested to refer to the original book to cross check their understanding.)

Organization (supposed to be) working for global community (WMM – 3).

In the last two articles we saw appeal of some world thinkers to initiate the revolution of consciousness and some of the painful concerns of humanity. Here we shall try to review partly the efforts initiated already by some organizations in the desired direction. We start with U.N.O. which is considered as an apex body caring for world community.

A)  U.N.O. (United Nations’ Organization) Ref WIKI. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Nations)

The United Nations (UN) is an intergovernmental organization whose stated aims include promoting and facilitating cooperation in international lawinternational securityeconomic developmentsocial progresshuman rightscivil rightscivil liberties, political freedomsdemocracy, and the achievement of lasting world peace. The UN was founded in 1945 after World War II, to stop wars between countries, and to provide a platform for dialogue. At its founding, the UN had 51 member states; there are now 193. From its offices around the world, the UN and its specialized agencies decide on substantive and administrative issues in regular meetings held throughout the year. The organization has six principal organs: the General Assembly (the main deliberative assembly); the Security Council (for deciding certain resolutions for peace and security); the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) (for assisting in promoting international economic and social cooperation and development); the Secretariat (for providing studies, information, and facilities needed by the UN); the International Court of Justice (the primary judicial organ); and the United Nations Trusteeship Council (which is currently inactive). Other prominent UN System agencies include the World Health Organization (WHO), the World Food Program (WFP) and United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF).
Background and creation
After World War II and the development of the atomic bomb, there was widespread agreement that humankind could not afford a third world war. Therefore, the United Nations was established to replace the flawed League of Nations in 1945 in order to maintain international peace and promote cooperation in solving international economic, social, and humanitarian problems.
What were or are the aims and objectives of U.N.O. (United Nations’ Organization)?
1.to promote world peace
2.to protect human rights
3.to help developing countries by funding
4.to promote better relations between countries
5.to promote social, economic and cultural development
6.to facilitate international law

7. to facilitate international security
Functions of the United Nations
1. Arms Control and Disarmament
2. Peace Keeping
3. Humanitarian Assistance: In conjunction with other organizations, such as the Red Cross, the UN provides humanitarian services to disaster areas. These agencies include: World Food Program and the High Commissioner for Refugees.
4. Human Rights: The Pursuit of human rights was one of the main reasons for setting up the United Nations, following the genocide of the Second World War. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights, though not legally binding, was adopted by the General Assembly in 1948 as a common standard of achievement for all.
5. International Court of Justice includes war crimes tribunal.
6. UN Security Council: Discusses global problems and can offer resolutions to try and deal with them.

B) World Health Organization (W. H. O.)

WHO goal: To improve equity in health, reduce health risks, promote healthy lifestyles and settings, and respond to the underlying determinants of health.

WHO objectives : To develop and implement multi sectoral public policies for health, integrated gender- and age-sensitive approaches that facilitate community empowerment together with action for health promotion, self-care and health protection throughout the life course in cooperation with the relevant national and international partners

WHO definition of Health:  Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. The correct bibliographic citation for the definition is: Preamble to the Constitution of the World Health Organization as adopted by the International Health Conference, New York, 19-22 June, 1946; signed on 22 July 1946 by the representatives of 61 States and entered into force on 7 April 1948. The Definition has not been amended since 1948.

C)  Center for Investigating Healthy Minds (http://www.investigatinghealthyminds.org/cihmFindings.html)

Led by world-renowned neuroscientist Dr. Richard J. Davidson, the Center for Investigating Healthy Minds at the Waisman Center, UW-Madison, conducts rigorous scientific research on healthy qualities of mind such as kindness, compassion, altruism, forgiveness, mindfulness and well-being.
Change your Mind. Change the World.

The work of the Center is rooted in the breakthrough insights of neuroplasticity - the discovery that our brains change throughout our lives in response to experience, suggesting that positive changes can be nurtured through mental training.

Key Findings:  The site elaborately provides various research projects, articles published and the findings which indicate that proper nurture, training to mind by systematic measures the desired developments can be brought about in the brain and subsequently the personality. This research and development has tremendous potential for use in the schools and homes for enhancing the effectiveness of the parents’ and teachers’ skills to accelerate the learning process of the children and also in the stress management of adults.

Future role of MIND training vision by year 2050:
Dr. Richard Davidson is a leading scientist in the field of brain plasticity and has demonstrated that by intervention of proper nurturing strategies at home, school and other effective media in the child environment and by imparting the training of contemporary practices; the skills of emotional intelligence can be effectively imparted. He is one of the leading scientists working for this cause on the platform of Mind and Life Institute. In one of his presentations (Google lecture 2009) the future role of MIND training is elaborated in his vision as follows: - by year 2050

- Mental exercise will be accepted and practiced in the same way as physical exercise.
- We will have science of virtual qualities.
- We will incorporate mind back into medicine and better understand how brain can modulate   peripheral biology, biology in the way; that affects health.

We will develop secular approach for method and practice for contemplative traditions to:

1. Teach teachers and children ways to better regulate emotions and attention and cultivate qualities like kindness and compassion.
2. Transform corrections so that forgiveness can be cultivated in victims and emotion regulation and stress reduction in offenders.
3. Increase awareness of our interdependence upon others and upon the planet and be more responsible care takers of our precious environment.
4. Promote their wider spread adaptation into the major institutes of our culture. This will help to restore civility, humility, gratitude and other virtues in our culture.

The book “Train your Mind change your Brain” (Sharon Begley) is a detailed account of many aspects in this area. The maternal state of mind during prenatal stages plays a pivotal role whereas paternal care, too, matters. The spirit of three years, lives with us until 100 years, they say. Hence, prenatal and early childhood years can really shape our mind.

D)  Research on the Maharishi Effect (http://www.mum.edu/m_effect/)

“I think the claim can be plausibly made that the potential impact of this research exceeds that of any other ongoing social or psychological research program. It has survived a broader array of statistical tests than most research in the field of conflict resolution. This work and the theory that informs it deserve the most serious consideration by academics and policy makers alike.” — David Edwards Ph.D., Professor of Government, University of Texas at Austin

In 1960, Maharishi Mahesh Yogi predicted that one percent of a population practicing the Transcendental Meditation technique would produce measurable improvements in the quality of life for the whole population. This phenomenon was first noticed in 1974 and reported in a paper published in 1976. Here, the finding was that when 1% of a community practiced the Transcendental Meditation (TM) program, the crime rate was reduced by 16% on average. At this time, the phenomenon was named the Maharishi Effect. The meaning of this term was later extended to cover the influence generated by the group practice of the TM-Sidhi program. Generally, the Maharishi Effect may be defined as the influence of coherence and positivity in the social and natural environment generated by the practice of the TM and TM-Siddhi programs.

Maharishi introduced the TM-Siddhi program, including Yogic Flying, in 1976. Group practice of this program was observed to be particularly beneficial. On the basis of analogies to physical systems, scientists estimated that the coherence generated by group practice of the TM-Siddhi program should be proportional to the square of the number of participants. Taking into account the “1%” finding, it was predicted that a group with size equal to the square root of 1% of a population would have a measurable influence on the quality of life of that population. For example, a group of 200 practicing the TM-Siddhi program together in a city of four million (100 x 200 x 200) would be sufficient to produce a measurable influence on the whole city; a group of 1,600 in the U.S. would influence 256 million (100 x 1600 x 1600) people, the whole population of the U.S.; and a group of 7,000 would influence 4.9 billion (100 x 7000 x 7000) people, the population of the world at that time.

The TM-Siddhi program was practiced in large groups on numerous occasions in the following decade, and the first statistical analysis of the effects was published in 1987. These showed a decrease of about 11% in violent crimes in Washington, D.C., in total crimes in Metro Manila, and in total crimes in the Union Territory of Delhi. Subsequent research has confirmed the existence and the universality of the Maharishi Effect. It has become possible to lodge a prediction in advance with the police and the mayor of a city and then create the effect. This was put to the test under the careful scrutiny of a distinguished review board in 1993 in Washington, D.C. The maximum decrease in violent crimes was 23.3%. The statistical probability that this result could reflect chance variation in crime levels was less than 2 in 1 billion.

Not surprisingly, since the theory and the phenomenon are so new to modern science, the methodology of a study is subjected to rigorous analysis by the journal review boards before a paper on the Maharishi Effect is accepted for publication. As a result, the research is really a gem of social science, not only on account of its significance, but also for the quality of its methodology.

E)  HAY HOUSE FOUNDATION

F)  MIND AND LIFE INSTITUTE ((www.mindandlife.org).

Mind and Life was co-founded in 1987 by the His Holiness the Dalai Lama, neuroscientist Francisco Varela and entrepreneur Adam Engle for the purpose of creating rigorous dialogue and research collaboration between modern sciences and the world’s living contemplative traditions. The organization believes that integrated, multi-disciplinary research collaboration is the most effective approach to investigating the human mind, developing a more complete understanding of the nature of reality, alleviating suffering and promoting well-being on the planet.

Over the past 25 years, Mind and Life has become a world leader in cultivating this integrated investigation and in developing research fields that explore the effects of contemplative-based practices on the brain, human biology and behavior.

The Mission of Mind and Life is to:

•  Develop the strategy and conceptual framework for a rigorous, integrated, multi-disciplinary investigation of the mind that combines first-person and second- person direct human experience with a modern scientific third-person inquiry
•  Develop a global community of scientists and scholars to conduct this investigation, and global communities of financial partners to provide the material resources to support this research
•  Delineate specific research projects that are strategically designed to advance these emerging fields of research
•  Communicate research findings to provide a scientific basis for developing and refining practices and programs designed to improve lives and societies; practices that cultivate the human qualities of attention, emotional balance, kindness, compassion, confidence and happiness

H) Many countless others:

As an illustration, some of the organizations in the mission of humanity are mentioned. But they are just very few. In each small part of the world where human stay countless missions are in progress. Many known-unknown organizations, groups, associations, clubs, temples, churches, ashrams and even solitary individuals are engaged in such a mission. The fabric of benevolence in the world is still not weathered away only due to the known-unknown contribution of such efforts.

Since the objective of all such efforts is conceptually same the association under one umbrella is a good idea. This is probably contemplated as we saw in the earlier blog. But howsoever ideal it may be it is very difficult to come to reality. All these organizations are managed by some people, some systems, some agenda. Howsoever noble they may be if one goes deep below the psyche of such organizations, they often have their sense of superiority or ego about their own mission. For this purpose they would like to retain their own identity which is in a way natural and should be acceptable.

We have seen that world scale organizations such as U.N.O. or its part W.H.O. which have been established by the world leaders for the purpose of world community are in existence for last several decades but still the need of ‘Revolution of Consciousness’ is felt on and often. Can such a revolution take place? Before answering the question all the concerned need to agree upon the definition of consciousness. What are the properties of it, what are its good and bad parts so as to effectively bring about the ‘revolution’ in the desired direction. How can pooling the contribution of all the existing resources in an ‘acceptable to all’ manner be possible?

When it comes to human welfare agenda, the aspects of morality and ethics (at individual and also at the organizational level) often assume the forefront. As we have seen in the earlier posts, the basic concepts such as ‘knowledge’, ‘desire’, ‘free will’ etc. are not clearly defined in the academics and related fields. Let us see the status of ‘morality’ and ‘ethics’ later.

WHAT MIND MEANS

'Revolution of Consciousness'

While I was thinking to initiate writing on ‘Mind’, a news items attracted my attention.
Russel Brand was the guest editor of NEW STATESMAN 24th October 2013 issue. The theme he chose was 'Revolution of Consciousness', and his high-profile presence has already guaranteed that the issue got noticed and splashed on prime time British TV. In his appeal he says before we change the world, we need to change the way we think.

Russell Edward Brand (born 4 June 1975) is an English comedian, actor, radio host, and author. His bio-data on WIKI reflects a controversial personality. But such controversial screen figures are often popular in fans. As we know in India, fans of film stars like M.G. Ramchandran (MGR) and B Jaylalitha have constructed their temples; later both became popular political leaders. Sanjay Dutt, Bollywood hero, the person right now in prison for punishment, is popular for his filmy Gandigiri.

Lynn Mctaggart, (As per WIKI Lynne McTaggart is an American journalist, author, publisher and lecturer, now living in London. According to her author profile, she is a spokesperson "on consciousness, the new physics, and the practices of conventional and alternative medicine". McTaggart is the author of six books, including The Intention Experiment and The Field.) In her recent News Letter Lynn sites Brand’s appeal. She mentions:

Brand and the many other contributors in this issue – Alec Baldwin, Naomi Klein, David Lynch, and many others – essentially argue what Albert Einstein argued a century ago: we cannot reform a world with the same mindset that created it. And we can’t heal the current paradigm with any sort of Band-Aid. As Jamie Kelsey-Fry says, quoting Howard Zinn: ‘Civil Disobedience is not our problem. Our problem is civil obedience.’  And Brand:  ‘We require a change that is beyond the narrow, prescriptive parameters of the current debate, outside the fortress of our current system.’

Brand says that we need to create a new revolutionary movement and revitalize the traditions of civil disobedience: ‘Our young people need to know there is a culture, a strong, broad union, that they can belong to, that is potent, virile and alive. . . .Take to the streets together with the understanding that the feeling that you aren't being heard or seen or represented isn't psychosis; it's government policy.'

Lynn continues: ‘I applaud Brand, Baldwin and all the celebrities in this issue for putting this issue front and center as a talking point on the international stage. But what’s missing in the magazine (and in most discussions of evolution) is a map for how all of us can participate, individually and as a group, in an organized system of evolutionary change. The biggest problem we face is our false sense of powerlessness. We are the most powerful generation, ever. We have a free and simple means, via the Internet to organize the entire planet in a system beyond the scope of any political party.

Here are a few preliminary thoughts of my own about what's really necessary’:

·       Making a revolutionary change of heart in each one of us, which truly recognizes on some visceral level, that we– friend and foe alike – are ultimately connected and that nature has designed us to cooperate, not compete.
·      Rejecting the mental hard drive we have all been programmed with that applauds and encourages the ‘I win/you lose’ mentality – competitive individualism at another’s expense.
·      Learning to see holism and to relate in holism.
·      Learning to organize in small and large groups.

·       Organizing all those yearning (deep desire with sadness) for change over the Internet as one vast consumer body, which will do the following

·         Get political. Identify and vote out any politician supportive of the corrupt economic system that is killing the planet and denying you access to life-supportive foods and natural medicines.
·         Vote with your purse. Stop buying and supporting any product that is harming the planet or other living things, including dangerous or ineffective prescription and non-prescription drugs, processed or GM foods, refined sugar, tobacco products and various toxic chemicals
·         Get the true storyStop believing the lies of the corporate media.  They’re in the pocket of industry. Create a new one.
·         Join together all the ‘dots’ – all the many hundreds of thousands of smaller groups wedded to evolutionary change but presently small and powerless
·         Create a unified, highly organized non-violent movement over the Internet that empowers everyone with the tools for peaceful rejection of the current system and peaceful evolution to a safer, fairer, healthier and more inclusive society.
·         Ask celebrities like Russell Brand to help put up the cash to create what amounts to a kind of revolutionary LIVE AID.

With this, she invites people views and proposals to assist her to take the movement off the ground. Besides Brand and Lynn others too are raising such concerns. Among many we shall see concerns of some prominent persons.

Bruce Lipton in his book ‘Spontaneous Evolution’ expresses concern for the wrong base of the science in view of the latest research findings.
Bruce Lipton is American developmental biology best known for his research in epigenetics and biology of Belief. The following questions reflect his concerns.
What are the pillars of Western thought that are crumbling – what you call the Four Myth-Perceptions of the Apocalypse – and why are they crumbling?
  • The four fundamental beliefs about our world that until recently have been the foundation of the scientific paradigm, have now been profoundly revised by the latest scientific discoveries.
  • These crumbling pillars include:
  1. Newtonian Physics
  2. Genetic control of life
  3. Survival of the fittest
  4. Notion of random evolution
Because these radical new conclusions haven’t reached the general public, society’s institutions continue to navigate by these “burned out stars,” and thus are taking the world in a misguided direction.
With all the knowledge and information we have now, how could it be that much of what we know is wrong?
  • While we have access to more content than ever before, content must be seen in the proper context in order for information to be used wisely.
  • Unfortunately, the current context for holding information is based on scientifically disproved beliefs.
  • We have accepted dis empowering programming as “truth and with new and more accurate knowledge comes empowerment.
If the Four Myth-Perceptions have proven untrue, what keeps them in place nonetheless?
  • Just as surely as it took more than a century for the world to accept Copernicus’s proof that the earth revolves around the sun, world-shattering beliefs meet with resistance because most people don’t want their worldview shattered.
  • Institutions founded on these now-disproved principles have a vested interest – i.e., their own survival – in keeping the old beliefs in place.
  • Those organizations (religion, health care, banking, etc.) are not run by awareness but by profit. So the short answer what keeps it in place? Money, or more accurately, the unquestioned belief that money has the right to rule.
Why do so many of our institutions, from health care to banking, all seem to be failing at once?
  • These institutions were founded to support, enhance and complement the structure of civilization based on prevailing beliefs of that time.
  • Where once these beliefs adequately addressed the perennial questions, their answers are no longer accurate.
  • As science is telling us, life operates as entangled whole, not merely as separate parts. Consequently, the failure of our institutions to integrate new understandings is system-wide, and so all systems seem to be failing at once.
  • As we are seeing particularly in the above-mentioned institutions, patching up the old system cannot work. Because there has been a change in the core beliefs of society, fundamental systemic change is required.
DALAI LAMA while inaugurating the Washington 2009 conference of Mind Life Institutes expresses the formulating global education policy to eliminate the present problems.

Everybody wants happy life at least less disturbances. Everybody has that basic right. Basic mover of Evolution is this desire. For this we have to preserve this planet. In 20th century marks many new things. Technology, science, new concept, health, education, tremendous advance is seen. But this is also a century of bloodshed. More than 200 million of human being killed according to some experts. There was relatively more violence in first half. Second half was relatively better. 1st half (early part) of 21st century is in continuation of 20th century. No immediate threat of nuclear hazards is seen. Hopefully this should be less violent century.

Formal education is much developed world over but depression, mental problems are increasing. Japan is deep in depression. China’s financial condition is improving but children of rich parents are reported restless in their minds.

As long children play together, no much problem. Quarrels; but within minutes play together. Elders have more knowledge, more ambitions, more dis-trust and more stress. Brain dominants the heart. Positive emotions remain subdued and negative emotions prove prominent. Problems are experienced in families, society and also nations as the rulers, politician are also nurtured in such climate. Therefore education has to be improved, made more effective for positive emotions nurture.

Be wise selfish not foolish selfish. More compassionate mind reduces stress, anxiety, anger it also improves physical health Marriage, external beauty imp, but inner beauty more important so troubles in marriages would be lesser. We have reached a stage when the material based happiness is seen reaching limit. Prayers alone can ensure no guarantee for satisfied attitude.
Modern education system, does it meet its requirements? We have to think as a world community and formulate education policy to prepare responsible world citizens for the 21st century.

My Comments: As already mentioned such concerns about world situation are being expressed by many thinkers and creating proper collective conscious is often a suggested solution. Consciousness is person's mind and thoughts. knowledge that is shared by a group of people. (Merriam Webster)

Thinkers are deeply concerned about the decline of morality and ethics and express desire for correcting measures. Brand expressed his desire to initiate revolution and Lynn Mctaggart probably wishes to lead this revolution as already engaged in similar projects. The task involves revolution of the thoughts/minds. The intended revolution is expected to bring about the improvement in responsible behavior. Behavior is the expression of mind. Is it really clear what ‘MIND’ which is the thing to be revolutionized means? So far at least no such all accepted definition is known. The thing to be transformed is not defined.
